I've just finished the new Folding Ideas video and it's well worth a watch.
Beyond seeing the weirdness of a visit to the Mr Beast studio, there's an interesting discussion of art and intention and what it means to build an audience.
I hadn't read any Tad Williams before this one and I'm pretty sure this cover was a big part of why I picked it out in the bookshop.
I have this in hardback and I have always loved this cover.

I apologise, I'm going to be plugging this quite a bit for the next couple of weeks.
I will be closing my Ko-fi page soon and moving my commission bookings back to my website.
Before it shuts, there are a few discounted commission slots still available. Use this link π

Anyway, that's enough geeking out about orchids. Back to something much more sensible... painting dragons for a book cover.
A couple of early spider orchids between some daisies
One benefit of being a freelancer is being able to take random days off to go and do niche things, like searching out the weird but wonderful early spider orchid.
Isn't it a cool little flower!
It doesn't grow in many locations but there can be thousands of them in each location.
So depressing.
I think it's bad for the President to threaten to annihilate an entire culture and i do not think you are being alarmist if you take his threats seriously and literally.
Art piece of a digital drawing of a marabou stork. The drawing is simple, graphic shapes to emphasize the form of the animal rather than a detailed and realistic portrayal. The bird has a very long and thick gray bill, bald head, long black wings, white belly and scruffy neck which comes up to partially cover the beak and head. The bird's legs are long, gray, and knobby.
Not feeling particularly silly today, but here's a fun drawing of a marabou stork looking coy and very stylish for the #RepostYourArt theme of #silly
Currently reposting nice things on my feed, which feels like the only thing I can do at the moment. What a weird, depressing day.
Photo of the earth rising over the moon taken by the Artemis astronauts
Artemis photo of Earth from the far side of the moon.
Breathtaking.
What a precious and beautiful planet we live on
solar eclipse from the far side of the moon
it really brings home the moon as its own body somehow

Probably my favourite Alvvays song.

This is why the 25th Amendment exists.
This is the purpose of having the 25th Amendment.
To not use this power to remove the president is not a passive act, a mere option: it is a positive decision to misuse the constitution.
It seems surreal that I'm working and continuing as normal while the sun is shining and birds are twittering, and at the same time this unhinged madness is hanging over us.
Green fields and blue skies
Devon looking very spring-like today.
Hot Cross Burns: a retro horror cover with a vampire's hand holding a cross, their skin sizzling.
It feels timely to remind everyone that this premade cover is still available. Featuring possibly my favourite made-up fake title so far and an original illustration.

The cover for the original volume of Thyme Travellers.
This is not a joke.
Thyme Travellers: An Anthology of Palestinian Speculative Fiction will be an ongoing series!
And weβre open to submissions for the second volume starting today: soniasulaiman.com/thyme-travel...
Some concerning things in this.
Barely over 50% of those polled see datacentres as a risk to the environment.
And 2/3rds have not heard -anyone- talking about datacentres -at all-
Talk to your family, friends & coworkers & make sure they understand how dangerous they are.
Happy #WorldBearDay. We live somewhat near a town called Congelton in Cheshire which has a story about having to sell the town's bible in the 1600s in order to buy a dancing bear.
I first saw (at the time, British) Sea Power at the Green Man festival and listening to them perform Machineries of Joy was the highlight of a fantastic set.

Songbird: a cover showing two finches in a mass of foliage.
Hot Cross Burns: an illustrated cover showing a vampire's hand holding a cross.
Flight Twenty Three: a cover showing a space shuttle launching.
I'm terrible at remembering to promote them, but I have a small selection of premade book covers available on my website.
I keep the prices competitive so that authors on a budget can access cover options that don't use generative AI. These are all made with licenced stock or my own illustrations.

Reference vs Art

I'm reminded of one of the conclusions in my biography of King John: 'He set about needlessly provoking people when he felt strong, then desperately trying to win them back when his confidence had evaporated.'
