CSS 'Variables'

In this very fun installment of PBS, @bartb.ie teaches us how to use CSS “variables”, which aren't actually variables (they're custom properties). Theyallow you to take advantage of Bootstrap to style web pages, but make the look and feel all your own.

A close view of small purple flowers growing on a stone wall. The flowers are growing from long creeper-like stems with small three-pointe leaves. The flowers themselves are just a few mm across and have asymmetric petals — two pointing up like ears, and, and three spread out over the lower half. Two yellow humps rise up in the center, looking like big eyes! There is a hint of an urban setting visible behind in soft focus.

A closeup of a flower head with three deep purple flowers and some buds standing proud of a background of variegated dark green & silver leaves. The flowers are beak-shaped and curving down a little. The leaves are drop-shaped with a ribbed edge and a very veiny texture.

The flowers are on the near bank of the canal, and the train on the far bank. The front of the train is the same shade of yellow as the flowers.

A close wide view of the white blooms at the top of a tall wild flower growing next to a rural road. The plant is about two foot tall, and the flowers are in clusters stop stalks with pyramidal arrangements of leaves, big and wide near the ground, and shrinking closer to the tip. Each leaf is broadly spade shaped, but has very jagged edges and very defined veins. The individual flowers are small, pure white, and have four widely spaced petals. Trees line the road, and a car can be seen approaching in soft focus behind.

Six black stamens surround a central yellow three-pointed stamen in the center of the flower, adding some interesting symmetry.

A low and wide view of flowers growing under trees. The flowers are small little blue bell-shaped flowers hanging down from the tops of foot-high flowering stalks, the flowering stalks rise up from between rings of dark green grass-like leaves that arc up from their centers and then back down. These arcing leaves lead the eye from the foreground to the nearest flower stalks. The trees behind have no leaves yet, and some have distinctive silvery white bark.

The grass beneath can be seen around the edges, as can part of a second, smaller, still closed flower in the upper-left corner.

… the more subtle choice was to evoke the feeling of being in a vert tall place by framing all the shots vertically. I didn't want to be too heavy-handed, so some are only a little vertical at 4:5, but others are as vertical as 2:3.

I hope my choices paid off 🤞

… the more obvious choice was to shoot low, close & wide. I like to shoot from my subject's level anyway, and by getting very close I can shoot wide without losing detail in the flowers themselves. By shooting wide the background is expanded rather than compressed, so it retains a sense of place …

… My aim was not to capture the flowers, but the flowers in their woodland setting. I made two deliberate choices to try make that happen — one that should be relatively obvious, and a more subtle one that's intended to work subconsciously …

2026-04 — Spring Flowers in Carton Woods, a Series by Bart Busschots — Glass Inspired the April 2026 monthly featured tag here on Glass I tweaked my walking habits to route through some of the woodland trials in Carton House estate east …

I've finished editing and sharing a series of photos showcasing spring flowers in the woods in #CartonHouse near #Maynooth. I really like how they came out, and I hope you notice they're a little different to typical flower macros.

Let me explain why …

A low and close view of a low-growing wild plant along the edge of a muddy forest trail. The plant is very low-growing and at first glance looks like it only has wide green waxy dark green notched leaves, but on closer inspection some stems stand a little tall if the leaves and are topped with tiny green flowers with four yellow-tipped stamens in the center of each.

A low, close, and wide view of a small low-growing wild flower at the edge of an earthen woodland path. The flowers themselves are about and inch across and bright yellow, with a big central circle of stamens, and a ring of countless thin petals. The flowers stick up over a dense bed of dark glossy green spade-shaped leaves. The flowers dominate the right-foreground, with the path running past and disappearing into the distance to their left. The trunks of countless still bare trees can be seen in the background in soft focus.

A ground-level close view of small purple wild flowers growing on a forest floor. The flowers are growing above dark green spade-shaped leaves, and each has two petals pointing up, like bunny ears, and row of three spread across their lower half like a broad face. There are very fine hairs in the center, where the colour changes to white with purple veins. Tree trunks are visible behind in soft focus.

A low and wide shot close to a clump of wild flowers growing through last year’s brown fallen leaves on the floor of a deciduous forest with bare-branches trees. The base of a tree trunk frames the left of the frame and a dirt path can be seen curving through the right of the scene in the mid-distance.

Inspired by this month's category I stretched out my walk today to spend some time on the woodland trial in #CartonHouse near #Maynooth. Lots of stuff for me to sort through and edit over the next few days, but these little primroses along the path were instant keepers! #Bloomscrolling

A 3:2 landscape-oriented portrait of the upper neck and head of a long-necked grey, white, and black bird with a long pointed light yellow beak. The bird is perfectly side-on with a clearly visible eye. The lower neck is grey, most of the face is white, but there is a line of black from the beach across the eye leading to a sprig of black feathers sticking out from the back of the head and coming to a point as they droop down. Behind the bird in soft focus is dark still water with three green lily pads in the lower left corner and the reflections or bare tree branches in the top two corners.

The top of a white big-top circus tent with four central poles adding four peaks to the top of the canvas. There are big red circles swooping across the canvas, some around the peaks, others in big arcs across entire diagonals. A big golden sign hanging between the two front tent poles reads “GERBOLA” in a big geometric font. There’s a blue sky with just one fluffy cloud above, and the scene is bathed in golden evening light, but the Irish flag in the right-most pole is being battered by a strengthening wind.
