My friends at NUML in Islamabad came through again & organized a wonderful event for my new book Aspiring Child. Students shared amazing analyses of the sonnets & the event concluded with a lively Q&A. No author could ask for their work to be taken more seriously youtu.be/h7XKk2z_DvA
I had a wonderful time chatting about Aspiring Child, my biography of Mary W. Shelley, with faculty and students at the National University of Modern Languages in Islamabad. Their insightful observations, analyses and questions helped me to understand my own book at a deeper level. Great fun!
Looking forward to the official #booklaunch of Aspiring Child tonight & tomorrow in #Islamabad - hosted remotely by the National University of Modern Languages - it will be part Mary Shelley talk & part reading of my #sonnets youtube.com/shorts/pvk9A...
I'm looking forward to tonight's/tomorrow's remote event - things are sadly unsettled in that part of the world, but if everything comes together as planned I'll share the recording as a bonus episode of the podcast - I so appreciate my friends in Islamabad and their efforts on my behalf
I really enjoyed this deep dive into the #Russian novels and #novelists of the 19th century - Reeve often draws interesting parallels with their European contemporaries - the book is from 1966 but there are a lot of editions in libraries and at used #book sites
No doubt Mary Shelley's personal tragedies inspired her writing of Frankenstein - wanting to bring back from the dead her mother, her firstborn, her half-sister - but many other factors as well, including perhaps her training as a visual artist.
Spending time this weekend bringing together some notes for my upcoming readings and talks about Mary Shelley, whose self education was so intense scholars have estimated she had acquired the equivalent knowledge of multiple Master's degrees by age 18
My biography of Mary Shelley begins with a sonnet about her mother's legacy and influence - a mother she only knew through her writings and others' remembrances as Mary Wollstonecraft died as a result of the birth when Mary was only a few days old.
Received the welcome news that Fare Forward: A Christian Review of Ideas will be publishing an anthology of poems that placed or received honorable mentions in their journal's contests - my sonnet "Galaxie" (written to my father) was an honorable mention in 2021. farefwd.com/index.php/20...
Last year as I was working on sonnets to Mary Shelley I made some memes from time to time - I thought I would share them again as I refresh my memory in preparation of my first readings from Aspiring Child, which will include a talk about Mary.
As I prepare for a couple of readings next week, a friendly reminder that Aspiring Child is available in three editions - #librarians #literatureteacher #booklovers #podcasters #readers
I appreciate my friends and colleagues at NUML putting together this graphic and hosting my book launch of Aspiring Child next week, especially Dr. Amina Ghazanfar - I look forward to presenting information about Mary Shelley and sharing some of my sonnets to her
Read Richard Key's commentary on his short story "Slouching Towards SPOMA" - just published at Twelve Winters Miscellany twelvewinters.com/key-commenta...
A week away from the official #book launch of Aspiring Child with my friends in Islamabad, the same week of a faculty #reading for Lindenwood, both remote - I would love to connect directly with fans of Mary #Shelley and #bibliophiles in general - don't be shy about reaching out.
Freshly published in Twelve Winters Journal, Richard Key's amusing and prophetic story "Slouching Towards SPOMA" - twelvewinters.com/key-slouchin...
Recently published in the Journal, "The Worthless Turtle" by Dennis McFadden. Sadly Mr. McFadden, a prolific author, passed away prior to our accepting his story - but his family gave us permission and encouragement to bring it out twelvewinters.com/mcfadden-the...
I have a couple of #readings coming up - meanwhile the most challenging part remains: making readers aware of your #book - #maryshelley #frankenstein #biography #gothic
I've had the good fortune of working for two terrific directors at the library over these last 25 years (and counting) - here I am with the first, Anita Walters, and the photo was taken by the other, Rachel Kocis. Great bosses are a blessing.
Our second spring term is rounding the bend toward its latter half--but writers out there, fear not: if you're thinking about kicking off your MFA journey, there's still plenty of time to apply to start our program this summer, when we'll offer another robust round of great classes to choose from!
In Episode 33 of our #podcast A Lesson before Writing, one of the issues we address is including words from other languages in an English-language text. #writingcommunity #englishlanguage #publishing #translation #books youtube.com/shorts/g4swm...
We had a great experience at #AWP 2026 - and in this video I explain why - #writinglife #books #authors youtube.com/shorts/cAiiI...
Brady Harrison and I weren't expecting to have such a great time in Baltimore, but we did. And the whole #podcast crew is looking forward to #AWP27 in Chicago (if we can prevent the multitalented Grant Tracey from quadruple booking himself).
I did not set out to write a biography of Mary - my goal was to write some quality sonnets - the idea of a biography emerged in the process of writing them, but the approach may have been a fortuitous accident, or the bright idea of my unconscious mind from the start.
Brady Harrison and I take years to write a novel, while Grant can knock out a Hayden Fuller mystery in about 40 days -- and our daily #writing sessions are just as diverse. In Episode 33 of the #podcast we talk about various approaches to achieving the same goal
Just one of the many topics we get into in Episode 33 of the #podcast - #writing #publishing #language #writingrules
I'm honored that the official #book launch and #reading for Aspiring Child will be hosted by the National University of Modern Languages in #Islamabad, Pakistan, April 20/21, 2026 youtube.com/shorts/eAKUO...
I'm so thankful for my friend and colleague Dr. Amina Ghazanfar, who has organized the official book launch and reading of Aspiring Child, hosted remotely by the National University of Modern Languages in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Freshly published in our Miscellany, James Joaquin Brewer's insightful commentary on his novel excerpt "Menelaus Meets Proteus." twelvewinters.com/brewer-comme...
