Love and Desire in Paradise cover

Love and Desire in Paradise cover

Prestigious publisher Fantagraphics brings this excellent work to North America, overlapping graphic journalism and graphic medicine. Originally published in French, the book brings numerous interviews with Palestinians and Israelis to life as they talk about two universal topics: love and sex. Parent-Rachdi travels between the two regions where she meets with each interviewee in a variety of settings, including a studio, a café, online, and more. Her travels and each of these encounters are brought to vivid life by Deloupy, whose immaculate backgrounds and foregrounds blend perfectly with the traditional comics look of the characters. Readers will spend just as much time admiring Deloupy's attention to detail as they will absorbing the touching and sometimes troubling stories of the interviewees. These stories range from the differing experiences of LGBTQ+ people raised in Palestine and Israel, to a single man using a service to be paired with a woman to "coparent" with, to a woman who conceives a child with her imprisoned husband through the clever smuggling of contraband-each story is an exercise in inspiration and examining societal expectations.
Heartbreakingly, each of these interviews was conducted before the deadly attacks of October 7, 2024, and the reader learns in the epilogue how the subjects' lives have changed.
This is a stunning work that humanizes groups of people so often defined internationally by their conflict.

"Reincarnation Stories goes flamboyantly off the rails, making a hash of narrative throughlines and pulverizing the divide between truth and fiction. Underneath the appearance of lawlessness, there's a huge amount of craft and care." — NPR

ULTRASOUND | Graphic Medicine A work of fiction, the book is framed as a science fiction thriller that deals with medical themes such as mind control, human experimentation, gaslighting, and depression, among others. For scholars and practitioners of comic studies and graphic medicine, Ultrasound is particularly significant not only for its comic affordances, but also for its departure from the ‘lived experience’ aspect of graphic medicine toward a speculative engagement with ethically fraught medical experimentation that highlights the human consequences of unregulated research practices and invasive technologies.

"In adopting this narrative structure, Stechschulte employs a distinctly Lynchian twist, in which the ordinary slips into the macabre, grotesque, and surreal." Graphic Medicine International Collective recommends Ultrasound by Conor Stechschulte! https://ow.ly/FoQe50YK2hQ
