Dark Regards cover
Comedian, musician, and hoaxer Hill and artist Topilin (I Hate This Place) tell the “extreme and brutal” and not-quite-true tale of Hill’s experience becoming the king of black metal and igniting an international incident. Based on a story often told by Hill, the book presents a fictionalized, down-on-his-luck Dave deciding to start a black metal band after a dark figure comes to him in a dream. Before his band is even assembled, Dave sends an email to a label of Norwegian black metal bands, challenging their egos and sending their darkest and most satanic members, battle axes in hand, on a mission to destroy Dave. Lovingly lampooning the black metal scene, Hill’s script is full of darkly funny characters with running gags that will likely elicit chuckles. This works in tandem with Topilin’s art, which is full of memorable character designs and occasional gags in the panels, such as amusing album names. There is some meandering before this comedy reaches its conclusion, but adult fans of metal and beyond will find it worth the journey and very CVLT.
