Although there has been some discussion about this recently (E.g., the #Science Corp. mentions it in their update: science.xyz/news/biohybr... ), we are making the first attempt to systematically assess the BN of the best available probes (high-density rigid, flexible, and biohybrid electrodes). 4/5

In close connection with this, we are introducing the term “ #Butcher_Number ” in the literature as a valuable parameter for assessing insertion-related damage and acute recording quality (first mentioned by #Markus_Meister @mameister4.bsky.social whom we thank for the term in the paper). 3/5

But scaling this is far from trivial. What are the theoretical and practical limits for #BCIs interfacing with the neural tissue? We are exploring this in our recent review, led by #Gergely_Katona (co-first-authored by #Attila_Kaszas and me), together with other brilliant members from our lab. 2/5

As we saw in the latest #Neuralink Summer 2025 update, the more electrodes we have, the more neurons can be recorded. They are planning to implant into multiple brain regions, ultimately aiming to reach every cell in the whole brain.

The coolest result, IMO, is active prediction of upcoming words in the sequence, suggesting that hippocampus is involved in the process of using information about current words to predict future words, even in the absence of consciousness.

On the longevity and inherent hermeticity of silicon-ICs: evaluation of bare-die and PDMS-coated ICs after accelerated aging and implantation studies - Nature Communications Silicon ICs are key to neural implants but face reliability challenges. Here, the authors show bare die ICs can be inherently hermetic, and PDMS encapsulation limits degradation over 12 months, offeri...
