Wellingtonia (red wood). Sequoladendron giganteum
The #LakeMeadows giant. A redwood planted sometime after 1852, and estimated to be 170 years old. History and nature makes for a great #TodaysWalk

A blackthorn (presumably) in full bloom)
List of birds detected by the Merlin app
On the 1st day of metrological spring, on the way to #MillMeadows on #TodaysWalk, I spotted this (presumably) blackthorn. I had walked under it, then looking back I saw how lovely it is. At the bottom of the meadow, after the rain had stopped, the bird song was amazing. Merlin listed them.

A blue tit hiding in the trees, almost invisible
We visited Belhus Woods Country Park to look for a 'field' of snowdrops. There were only a few clumps near the entrance. After an hour's walk, we had a cup of tea and watched the birds on their bird tables. As I was quite far away, it's a case of 'spot the birdy'. You'll have to zoom in.

A clump of Snowdrops
Between the road and the path in #MillMeadows, behind the barbed wire fence, behind the brambles, the first sign of spring - the snowdrops - are in full bloom. #TodaysWalk

Old rotary mower dumped on a meadow footpath.
It's never good to see rubbish dumped in #MillMeadows. An old mower is a bit much though. #TodaysWalk

A dead hedge on the left of a path going up hill.
It's been a while since I was last able to get down this hill. So the dead hedge was new to me. The path it blocks goes to a large oak tree them fizzles out. I have no idea why it needs protecting. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows

Catkins on a spindley tree
Don't be fooled, the catkins are starting to grow, but winter's not over yet. It's 5°C in #MillMeadows. There's plenty of time left for a cold snap. #TodaysWalk

Government unveils biggest overhaul to water in a generation
If Labour won’t nationalise water, their “big overhaul” is a con.
Sewage in our rivers. Bills going up. Profits protected.
Public services should be in public hands.

Left: The moon above a bare tree. Right: New steps up a steep incline
On a cold, still, quiet and frosty afternoon, I went looking for the new steps in #MillMeadows. I found the moon above the trees first, and then later the new steps. They are great, as there is an overgrown diversion for those who can't walk up, or down easily. #TodaysWalk

A silver birch, growing around an LED street lamp, but dormant on the other side.
The Silver Birch keeps growing if there is sufficient light - regardless of the season. The new LED street lights are affecting nature in ways we didn't predict #TodaysWalk

Of the 4 or 5 large spreading oaks at the top of Mill Meadows, this one is furthest along to losing its leaves, by a long way. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows

In times of fear people understandably want action - but restricting protest is likely to fuel tensions by removing legal and safe ways for people to be heard.
Being able to use protest to challenge govts and stand up for what we believe in is central to a healthy democracy. It must be upheld.

A paisley like golden design painted on a tree trunk.
My attention was drawn to this tree covered in these pretty designs, in #MillMeadows. The lady was appreciative of them, as were her small children. On reflection, though, I'm not sure a tree trunk is a proper canvas. #TodaysWalk
