I’m looking for an automated way to read others’s scientific data without giving credit or acknowledgement, and also claim full credit for insights from it. And I want it to have a fitting name

Además, si (como parece) dentro de Asgard el clado más cercano a las eucariotas son las Heimdallarchaeia, queda súper poético, porque en mitología nórdica Heimdall era el puente entre Asgard y el mundo de los hombres...

Phylogenomics of Asgard archaea reveals a unique blend of prokaryotic-like horizontal transfer and eukaryotic-like gene duplication - Nature Communications The genomes of Asgard archaea, the closest prokaryotic relatives to eukaryotes, are larger than those of other archaea and contain multiple genes seemingly acquired from bacteria. Here, Manzano-Morales and Gabaldón quantify gene duplication, loss, and transfer events in Asgard genomes, showing that gene duplications, rather than horizontal gene transfers, are the primary drivers behind the increased genome sizes.

#Paper Our new study on #Asgard archaea is out in Nature Communications. We find a distinctive evolutionary pattern: widespread #HGT, but genome expansion mainly through gene duplication. An interesting window into the origins of #eukaryotic complexity.

'Asgard archaea' no solo sigue siendo un nombre chulo, además están mostrando más y más maneras en las que parecen una forma transicional entre procariotas y eucariotas

Phylogeny-aware Simulations Suggest a Low Impact of Unsampled Lineages in the Inference of Gene Flow During Eukaryogenesis Abstract. The topologies of gene trees are broadly used to infer horizontal gene transfer events and characterize the potential donor and acceptor partners

Bernabeu, @microbiobits.bsky.social and @tonigabaldon.bsky.social use simulations to test for the robustness of inferred relative timings of gene transfers in the lineage leading to the ancestor of eukaryotes

We are very sad to hear of the passing of Dr Jane Goodall Hon FRSB. Dr Goodall’s work as a primatologist and conservationist was truly inspiring and, though her presence will be sorely missed, we are sure that her legacy will live on.

Surely one of the all-time best conference outreach activities: an evolution-inspired decorated street for Les Festes de Gràcia #ESEB2025

A narrow street decorated for a festival with large, colorful papier-mâché sea creatures hanging overhead, including several Nautilus figures with striped shells. Bright fabric shades in purple, black, and green are strung above, while additional decorations such as flowers and lizards adorn the sides. Apartment balconies and building facades line the street.

A man wearing a headset microphone is giving an outdoor science talk, pointing at a large screen showing an image of the flatworm Macrostomum lignano. The slide text reads "Separate sexes are not a given," with labels pointing to "Testes producing sperm" and "Ovaries producing eggs." Festival decorations, including colorful paper flowers and geometric designs, hang in the background, and people are gathered to watch.

@rawwiberg.bsky.social explained that not everything we assume about sex is a given and that we can learn a lot from the exceptions.

Interested in #AsgardArchaea? I know I am! Today at #ESEB2025 I will be at poster 082 explaining my work on how they got such huge genomes and what this can tell us about the road to eukaryogenesis
