Where have all the Pirates gone? strategic party interactions in the electoral stagnation, rise, and fall of the Pirates - Comparative European Politics Comparative European Politics - This paper addresses two related questions. First, why did some of the many Pirate Parties that emerged at the turn of the millennium fail to gain traction, while...

Irony: I could not access my own comparative paper on the Pirate Party so had to ask for a colleague to download it for me.
Anyway, the paper is out and I actually like it:

fantastic piece by colleagues @jeberle.bsky.social & Daniel Sitera on how small member states facilitated the deregulatory turn in EU digital policy. A much needed CEE perspective beyond the usual suspects of France and Germany! @gorwa.ca @bencrum.nl @timoseidl.bsky.social

NEW OPINION PIECE OUT NOW

Daniel Šitera and myself take a different look at the "deregulatory turn" in EU digital policy. Building on our academic research, we argue that the key enabling role of smaller EU states have been largely overlooked.

How Many More Cloud Scares Does Europe Need? Robin Berjon urges the EU to dismantle the entrenched US monopolies that are undermining the goal of tech sovereignty.

Read @robin.berjon.com on cloud infrastructure

Europe must embrace a “break-and-build” strategy:
“break” entrenched monopolies and
“build” its own digital infrastructure and addressing on a sector-by-sector basis

Brussels effect or experimentalism? The EU AI Act and global standard-setting Looking at the nature of AI technology and the contents of the EU AI Act, the external impact of the Act is better understood in terms of experimentalist governance than in terms of the much-cited ‘Br...

New paper on a new topic in @policyr.bsky.social

I analyse the EU’s AI Act and its place in the global governance of the AI.
Examining the economy of AI + the contents of the Act, I conclude that expecting a ‘Brussels effect’ is neither apt nor useful.

Álvaro @alvarooleart.bsky.social were really lucky to have the chance of discussing RECLAIM's recommendations on the digital information sphere with @juliarone.bsky.social. What are the ideas still outside the box on (dis)information regulation?

Join us for the VICES workshop on the Externalities of EU's digital transition for (semi)peripheral countries!
From lithium mining in Serbia to Hungary's contested battery bet and data extractivism and neo-colonialism in the Global South. The bad examples are many. But maybe also the alternatives?

I'm desperate to read in-depth analyses of Israel's war with Iran & potential consequences. It seems to be really (!) important. But I don't see much.
Is this the result of algorithmic filtering, people being less active on Bluesky or low salience? I'm sure it's not because non-experts have shut up

"Europeans have reverted to instinctive support for Israel, championing its right to self-defence despite U.S. intel indicating that Iran is not actively pursuing nuclear weapons.
What Europe is really backing is Netanyahu’s survival quest and dreams of remaking the Middle East"

Sick & tired of tech oligarchs & how disinformation is monetised? Check out the paper by Julia Rone (and follow her on Bluesky!) & I published today in @cogitatiomac.bsky.social: “Reversing the Privatisation of the Public Sphere: Democratic Alternatives to the EU’s Regulation of Disinformation” 👇

Basically, we argue that the EU regulates a lot but it's mainly regulations that miss the mark - they are both bureaucratically burdensome and completely inadequate to challenge the business power of Big Tech, since the latter has been deeply involved in the regulatory process itself.

First post on Bsky after a very successful detox from social media.
Paradoxically, a post on our paper with @alvarooleart.bsky.social on how the EU failed to invest in alternatives and why it *did not* become a normative leader in regulating Tech.
