Accelerate building an independent European social web Today Bluesky went down. This is why our vision for a fully independent European social web matters. You are the first users of Eurosky. You are the community making this vision a reality. We are 10,000 strong and if each one gave 5 or 10 euros today, we will have enough to do the next step in our roadmap. Be part of building European tech. At Eurosky, we are building the European backbone for what we believe is the future of the web - the Atmosphere. The Atmosphere is a new generation of apps & services on the web developed by an ever-growing number of startups, developers & organisations. What sets the Atmosphere apart is that all these apps & services work together. And at the center of it all are personal web accounts (technically called Personal Data Servers or PDS). Each person's account holds their user identity, data and connections across all these apps. Every user controls their data and which apps can access it. Today we operate the largest production service for Atmosphere identities in Europe with 10,000 of us already on Eurosky. Our goal is much bigger - we are working towards a goal of 50% of all Europeans being on a healthier, open social web by 2030. It will take Eurosky and many other builders to achieve this. To get there we need full digital infrastructure hosted in Europe and governed by European law. We launch this fundraising drive on a day where Bluesky has had a very big outage with the service down for most of the day. Bluesky reported a DDOS attacks and this can happen to anyone, but it highlights more than ever that we need a totally independent backbone for the Atmosphere. We are raising funds to accelerate our plan to build this, including relays, indexing, feed generation, moderation and other components needed to run apps on 100% European infrastructure. So the next time there is a massive outage across the Atlantic, or a platform takes the wrong turn, we have independent European technology we can rely on. About Eurosky Eurosky is an independent European initiative spearheaded by a coalition of entrepreneurs, technologists and civil society organizations working towards a future where Europe has a thriving open social web that's innovative, competitive and built on European values. Our mission is to build and operate sovereign digital infrastructure that enables European entrepreneurs and developers to build new products and services faster and better — and to catalyze healthier social experiences that delight people. Eurosky is an initiative of Modal (Stichting Modal), a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands supporting social technologies in the public interest. Use of funds There are 10k of us already on Eurosky, if we contributed an average of €10 each, we would hit our first target of €100k! This will allow us to build Eurosky infrastructure faster so we get closer to having fully independent European social apps. €100,000 will go towards: • Building a European microblogging app backend, to support European apps • Growing our PDS capacity • Supporting up to 100k users Regardless of the amount raised, we will report monthly on how it's been used and our progress. Eurosky was made possible because of micro-donations made by thousands of people who donated to our Free our Feeds campaign last year. And it’s this kind of collective support that will allow us to keep building.

Europe is starting to think seriously about its own social web.

Not just platforms —
but infrastructure, governance, and independence.

Thx to @ifixit.com I recently replaced the worn battery of my 7-8 yrs Surface Pro 6. It's definitely a challenge dissembling and replacing by not destroying anything. In my case the digitizer board broke and I had to replace it also. Finally all done! 💪 #ifixit #DigitalSovereignty #sustainability

The digital sovereignty dilemma is a false choice — here’s how enterprises can have both Amid geopolitical tension and AI's rise, the instinct to build walls around technology is understandable — but misguided.

Digital Sovereignty doesn't mean putting up digital walls. Open Source, which underpins Digital Sovereignty, is more likely to follow open standards than proprietary software.

The math of engineering is broken. An #AutoCAD seat is ₱100k/yr while entry-level pay is ₱260k. This gatekeeping means only big biz thrives while others resort to piracy, staying stuck in a cycle they can't escape. Smaller skilled firms can't compete #FreeCAD #DigitalSovereignty. #FOSS

Trying to migrate to #FreeCAD since 2019. It’s a battle against "free" corporate licenses in schools and rigid engineering mindsets. Fighting for #DigitalSovereignty and #FOSS can be overwhelming, but it matters.

This application can not be mandatory, because it is a service. However, it creates a problem for adult users who simply don't want this service.
There is two possibilities: this is a wrong decision, made by people without understanding, or a disguised surveillance.

Digital Sovereignty: Wildberger Wants Less Microsoft and Palantir Digital Minister Wildberger pushes for independence from US tech giants, relies on an "IT video referee" and plans a European Palantir alternative.
