Given that I have multiple flights coming up, I was wondering whether the US Congress should take a cue from the Catholic Church. Whenever a part of the government is unfunded, we lock the House and Senate into their Chambers and don't let them come out.

AI Cronyism is on full display in DC now. If it weren't so dangerous to all of us, it would be outright fascinating how fast the idea that "states are the laboratories of democracy" disappears, once your party is in charge.

It's hard to overstate how close the US has come to having private, unaccountable, and nontransparent companies regulate our access to the internet. Given how many services are now online-only, that would have been a power akin to that of the courts.

Between patient privacy and US corporate profit, the chance that the America First Global Health Strategy will genuinely consider data protection laws is slim.

It is strange how many people worry that digital sovereignty might spell the end of the open internet. That would mean that closed software with its proprietary protocols is preserving open access, while open source and open standards are a restriction on it.

In this debate about AI-assisted email writing, one question doesn't get asked: "Are you truly communicating if AI is writing the emails for you?" In the worst case, you have two AIs writing to each other something no human ever reads.

I don't think that the US needs guardrails on AI in government as much as we need Congress to rethink its role. Most of the oversight actions from our legislative branch, from constant Impeachments to the government shutdowns, have become simply performative.

I find it very optimistic to predict that the end of Sora will bring sanity into the AI sector. It's more likely that they just find another pointless vanity project in their hunt for human-like AGI.

Free Software Friday! Good monitoring can help spot problems before they become an issue. With Prometheus, it is rather simple to build tech monitoring and create time series.

Leaders of the civil society? Researchers and scientists? Nope, the new appointments to the AI advisory council are exclusively ballroom-donating CEOs. But I'm sure they are all just appointed for their visions and leadership qualities.

The push for a digital currency is meant to make the world less dependent on the whims of US politics. That wouldn't work if the infrastructure behind it were run by US companies, subservient to the US president and his ballroom.

The global south is waking up to the fact that dependencies on a few cloud service providers might not be in their best national interest. Too bad it took a war and some exploding datacenters to reach that state.

Honored to share my story with Voyage Washington. We dug into open source, digital sovereignty, and what it really takes to scale in an AI-driven world.

We don’t always need more tech in classrooms. Sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to unplug.
Why less tech might mean better learning, find out:

Given that the search market is dominated by one company, a call for a new engine might be prudent. Yet, the bigger issue won't be building it. The problem will be to get people to change their habits and actually use it.

Avoiding vendor Lock-in is now one of the driving forces behind Open Source adoption in Europe. It clearly shows that IT leaders have understood that you cannot be at the mercy of a single vendor or foreign government.

The call for Big Tech providers to pay their fair share for Open Source isn't new. Yet, the cost AI has on selective Open Source projects is giving the issue a new urgency.

It's genuinely worrying how many Tech companies don't have a plan B for what they will do if their AI gambit fails. Given the amount of money that poured into the sector, it should be likewise concerning how many investors don't have a plan B.

Language Models can be wrong for a variety of reasons. The Forbes Tech Council is featuring 17 experts, including me, to offer a glimpse of the ever-growing list of technical and organizational problems that cause LLMs to give idiotic and narcissistic answers.

Most foundational model AI companies in the US don't offer custom models. Thus, it's no wonder that researchers and smaller companies default to open source. The sole focus on cost shouldn't be a sufficient explanation.

It's a bit telling that a telco magazine forgets that the last time telcos resisted interoperability, the government forced their hand. Maybe, more regulation is what's needed in today's cutting-edge technology as well.

Looks like IBM is concerned about its revenue outside of the US. Yet, not concerned enough to change themselves or lobby for sensible US politics.

So far, it seems like wishful thinking that AI will improve how we have discourse on social media.

What is the chance of the US adopting comprehensive privacy laws? My cynical guess is slim to none. After all, most privacy-minded individuals don't donate to political campaigns or finance ballrooms.

It's strange how many parents believe that coding camps and AI classes are the most important aspects of growing up in a tech-driven world. What about curiosity, empathy, and good citizenship?

So, a significant part of European companies are afraid that their access to the US clouds might be cut off. Yet, most have no plan on how to deal with it. Seems like solid business planning.

It's so weird. Why would the regulation be any different if I create misleading ads with AI or not? Shouldn't the goal be simply to ban misleading ads?

If you don't sanitize AI training data, you get AI worrying about it being replaced by AI. I guess worrying about AI is now something we can outsource to AI.

It's an interesting debate about how AI changes the job prospects for new graduates. However, we shouldn't forget that humans decide on strategy, hiring, and AI use.
