Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues.

Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA).

are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe.

Photograph of a car with a squirrel inside of it, perched on the steering wheel. The car is the color of champaign at a beige convention, and the squirrel is the color of squirrels. The squirrel is holding a package of crackers in it's mouth. They are the kind like you get at a restaurant, where you get two crackers wrapped in plastic.

The driver's side window is slightly cracked. This is how the squirrel got in, and how it got out. It threw the crackers out first, and then climbed out after them. Everything in this operation suggested that this was not the squirrel's first rodeo.

A closeup of the squirrel sitting on the steering wheel. The squirrel deserves a name, so we'll call her Anjeloma, and she's what you might call a winner. She is still squirrel colored. The crackers are white, and labeled "Zest." As if Anjeloma needed more zest. Squirrel, please.

You can't see much of the car, but you can see smudges of grunge at the edges of the windshield, where the wipers have cast aside the debris of previous rains and pollen-falls.

The world is stupid, but I just watched a squirrel break into a car in the parking lot below me, steal a package of crackers, and escape to a nearby tree. So at least somebody is winning.

I'm telling you, the solution to many problems in education is to hire school librarians (at a liveable wage, with administrative support, and adequate resources). Your students don't need an LLM, they need a librarian.

"Turns out students aren't great at asking questions well." No fucking shit. Literally any educator could tell you that. 90% of my job as a high school librarian is trying to figure out what kids actually want versus what question they asked.

Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Content “In recent months, more and more administrative reports centered on LLM-related issues, and editors were being overwhelmed.”

after much deliberation and giving AI the benefit of the doubt, Wikipedia editors have had enough of AI slop. New policy bans LLM generated content, periodt www.404media.co/wikipedia-ba...

Meme with text from Mariame Kaba (@prisonculture) Art can encourage dissent and we need more of that in our current moment. Art is important not just because it makes us think and feel differently (which is critical), but also because it helps to disrupt patterns and old ways of thinking. Artists have the power to ask, “Why can’t we do it this way?” “Why don’t we try this?” and “Why is that not possible?” These are the kinds of questions that need to be asked now as we organize to defeat fascism.

Running Toward ICE A record of resistance in Chicagoland

Running Toward ICE: A record of resistance in Chicagoland.

I did the writing and reporting for this comic, which was illustrated by the amazing @soljbrager.bsky.social. Most of this was reported last fall, and a lot has happened since, but I hope the lessons and stories are useful.

This contains broad vague language that would ban any book for readers under 18 that has LGBTQIA+ characters or themes (like my Dotty Morgan books).

The Trump Administration Can’t Kill Black History Month We don’t need permission from the government to commemorate a complex past.

Last week, my mother took me and my kids to see the school where, 60 years ago, she was among the first wave of Black students to integrate a previously all-White school. We wanted to remind my kids that Black history is not just famous people in textbooks, it is often the people right next to you.

"Enemies to lovers" should mean "we have been drawn into a conflict that is bigger than either of us that has alienated us from society to the point where my enemy is the only one who understands me" and should involve at least one murder attempt.

Not: "my new co-worker is meant to me :( but hot?"

Like, as depressing as it would be for appropriate support for universities to be a fully partisanized issue, it would be quite a bit LESS depressing than the status quo, where an idea like creating institutions à la the UC system of the 1960s and 70s is fully outside the two-party Overton window

Reminds me of the dynamic where R's say all their nonsense about the radical Marxist indoctrination in universities and then Dems very nervously say "um we believe that higher education plays an important role in training our nation's future workforce, btw we can no longer afford the English dept"

People living under fascism didn’t survive by giving up joy—they protected it.

They held onto the things fascism tried to erase: art, friendship, jokes, rituals, language, memory.

Not as escapism but as resistance. As proof they were still human.

Joy isn’t frivolous under fascism. It’s strategic.

A local librarian's research helped secure a settlement for descendants of displaced Black Portlanders Byrd took her research and family history and created 'wearable history.'

"Last summer, the city of Portland paid millions to descendants of Black families forced from their homes by racist urban renewal projects."

"It was an effort decades in the making."

"And one of the driving forces was a local librarian."

So, librarians, do you have a contingency plan for when these goons enter your facility? You might not be able to block access to a public building, but how are you alerting your patrons? Do you have a plan to get them out safely? Because you should.
