Today I went looking for a paper on flares because I need to self manage myself. The result I needed was written by @c-flurey.bsky.social, my real life best friend. I'm grateful I got what I needed, and annoyed I have spent years not asking my Proper Expert and sending her cat pics instead./2

I have a lifelong inflammatory condition, and used to research lifelong inflammatory conditions. It's been 10 years, and I still find ways my reflexivity shapes my knowledge of literature and how I engage with it. 1/2

Great thread by @ipanalysis.bsky.social on AI and qualitative analysis (and other things). I remain completely baffled about the enthusiasm for using AI to do qualitative analysis and (reflexive) TA specifically... not least because it is profoundly unethical, exploitative, eco disaster technology

Factors associated with patient activation in inflammatory arthritis: a multisite cross-sectional study AbstractObjectives. Patient activation covers the skills, abilities and behaviour that impact how able and willing someone is to take an active role in sel

This work makes it clear how important #HealthLiteracy is in supporting people to self-manage their health. Supporting people to find, evaluate and use health information is absolutely essential for them to self-manage their health effectively. /9

It is worth noting that positive and negative affect were not significant contributors to patient activation. The model is more complex than perhaps we originally thought or there may be condition-specific factors. /8

There was also huge variation in patient activation scores across the sample. This isn’t in the paper but some participants had very big changes to their scores in the 9 months between surveys. This means planning self-management support based on patient activation should account for fluctuation. /7

I found some interesting stuff about patient activation! Self-efficacy, internal health locus of control, and 2 aspects of health literacy (having enough info to manage health and understanding this info enough to know what to do) explained variance in patient activation. /6

251 people took part. 94% were white British – there’s a lot more I know now about gathering data from a diverse range of people that I didn’t know then. Participants were mainly female (74%), with Rheumatoid Arthritis (66%) and had lived with their condition for an average of 14.5 years. /5

I had done #QualitativeResearch to help me decide which factors might be important, and added demographic questions. The existing model of patient activation suggested positive & negative affect was important, so I added this to see if this was the case in people with #InflammatoryArthritis. /4

I wanted to find factors that explained differences in patient activation. I decided to do a survey with 2 time points with the same people to see if patient activation also changed over time. /3

I’ve picked a paper I did as part of my #PhD funded by @versusarthritis.bsky.social and published with @rheumjnl.bsky.social. I looked at Patient Activation – how able and willing someone is to take an active role in self-managing their health. /2

I have decided to do #FlashbackFriday and share a journal article of mine from the last few years. I will talk about what I found and what these findings mean in the real world. I hope others will try this too, so we can identify shared research interests in #AcademicSky. /1
