Temporary accommodation should be just that, temporary. It should also be safe. We need to act urgently, no more children can lose their lives because they don’t have a decent, stable roof over their heads.

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Behind every one of these children is a family grieving the loss of a child that should never have died. These children and their families have been failed by our system.

This #WorldCurlewDay, I’ve joined the call for the Government to back the UK Curlew Action Plan.

The curlew is an iconic and much-loved bird that is now in serious decline.

If we don’t fight for it now, future generations will never hear it.

We need more truly affordable social housing and we need it now.

2 days ago 2 0 0 0

With fewer than 3 in every 100 homes listed for rent in England currently being affordable for those on local housing allowance and with nearly 176,000 children living in substandard, insecure, and unsafe temporary accomodation, we are at a crisis point.

It was an honour to speak at Shelter’s event on the future of council homes.

It was also a privilege to hear from the brilliant Anne Marie about her experience with social housing and just how vital it is.

Wonderful to meet with the brilliant Dave & Sarah from Stepping Stone this week.

The work they do to support people experiencing or threatened by homelessness, helping them to get back on their feet and find their independence again, is truly inspiring.

We have heard time after time that lessons would be learnt yet here we are again.

So, I believe we now have to ask, is Prevent really fit for purpose – and what needs to be done to ensure no other family is forced to grieve a death that should never have happened?

No family should ever endure a loss like the families of Alice, Elsie and Bebe. Or like my constituents, Gary and Jan Furlong, whose son James was killed in the Forbury Gardens attack alongside Joseph and David. These deaths were all ruled as probably avoidable.

This is utterly chilling. These are not the words of a leader, these are the words of someone who is very dangerous & doesn't believe international law applies to him.

We should be unequivocal in our opposition to this war that has been started by Trump & Netanyahu.

Statement on the situation in Cuba

The US President signed an executive order on 29 January unjustifiably declaring Cuba as an “extraordinary threat” to the national security of the United States and authorising new sanctions against any country supplying oil to Cuba. The country was already facing a severe fuel shortage. These new sanctions have considerably worsened an already dire situation causing a huge humanitarian impact. This is a collective punishment of a civilian population. It is also a direct violation of the sovereignty of nations and international free trade.

We need to reject all extraterritorial sanctions and uphold the right of sovereign states to determine their own trading relationships with Cuba. Solidarity with Cuba.
