What babies’ cries really tell us – and why maternal instinct is a myth Is it possible to interpret babies’ cries in order to understand their needs accurately?

Almost 90,000 (!) readers now know what babies' cries are saying. Why not you 😏? 👇 (do not hesitate to disseminate!)

I hope to see some of you in Bielefeld for this upcoming workshop on measuring and modeling plasticity. ECRs in and around Germany with a penchant for statistics should consider applying while spots remain available!

Indirect genetic effects among neighbors promote cooperation and accelerate adaptation in a small-scale human society Social effects on fertility promote population growth and the evolution of flexible cooperation in a small-scale human society.

I'm very excited to share the central paper from my PhD out now in Science Advances. We investigated how social effects among neighbors shape the evolution of reproductive cooperation and the pace of adaptive population growth among the Indigenous Tsimane of Bolivia.

This photograph captures Sir David Attenborough seated outdoors on the rugged terrain of Skomer Island. Behind him, the ocean and coastal cliffs form a scenic backdrop under a clear sky. Sir David, dressed in a khaki jacket and light trousers, looks towards the camera with a gentle expression, exuding a sense of warmth, calm, and wisdom. Around him, puffins can be seen flying and perched on the rocky ground, illuminated in rays of golden sunlight as the sun sets behind the cliffs.

Happy 99th birthday to the man who gave voice to the wild. 🎉

Sir David Attenborough, thank you for a lifetime dedicated to the natural world, and for sharing its story with wisdom, wonder, and grace.

You've inspired generations to fall in love with nature.

It is 100% a very challenging research topic and new researchers I meet have often remarked (well-intentioned) that animal emotion / empathy work might become "the death of my career". I would 100% have it no other way - it is what I love most and as long as I can do this, I will.
Enjoy the read 😎

I am grateful for all the years of experience in/with interdisciplinary labs, workshops, meetings, and collaborations - they all have helped me tremendously to get closer to answering these questions. This includes my great co-authors of this paper: Sonja Koski, Ludwig Huber, @clauslamm.bsky.social

How is empathy defined in humans? What measures are applied? How do emotions play a fundamental role in its assessment? And how can all this be translated as conservatively as possible to other animals? A strong connection between and knowledge of human psychology and animal behavior is essential.

This work represents the bulk of my research: investigating empirical evidence of "human uniqueness" in animals, with a firm grip on its theoretical foundation
