Lyme disease is spreading—a new vaccine could curb infections A new Lyme disease vaccine made by Pfizer and Valneva could lower infection rates of the tick-borne illness, but federal approval and patient uptake could be a challenge

We had a #vaccine against #Lyme disease in the 90s that was pulled after a few years bc of ultimately unfounded safety concerns. Now we may get another shot at a vaccine to prevent a potentially debilitating disease that's only increasing today.

The Anti-Intellectualism of Silicon Valley Elites I recently re-read Richard Hofstadter's Anti-Intellectualism in American Life, and now every time a reactionary Silicon Valley billionaire opens his mouth, I think about it. graph showing lowest snowpack on record for Colorado basin

I try to not despair, but this is beyond concerning. We had 70+ degree days in February in Flagstaff, and only 1 day of enough snow to snowshoe. It was pretty much gone the next day. Will we go the way of Sinagua people?

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A bad thing is unfolding at NIH this week: It looks like the Trump administration is trying to replace key civil servant scientific leaders, the Institute Directors, with political hires. These directors control the NIH budget, tens of billions.

ICE tried to deport an Indigenous woman:

Leticia Jacobo, a 24-year-old member of Arizona's Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, was born in Phoenix.

She was pulled over for a traffic violation and her license was suspended and so that night ICE was preparing to deport her.

Great article I encourage everyone to read. This phenomenon happens everywhere. Let me tell you about the time I crowdfunded some research, and paid for publication fees and various bits and bobs out of my own pocket. And one thing I'm paying for myself now....which I'll talk about later
