Sucks that feminism became politically verboten at exactly the moment when the right calcified into a masculinity death cult

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.
I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.
Andry José Hernández Romero, I remember you, even if I do not know how to articulate my horror, rage, & sorrow at your treatment by my government.
No one has heard from you in 86 days.
As vigil, I’m posting a photo* (or, today, a video) of you every day until you are returned from El Salvador.
Musk throwing out Trump’s history of sexual violence is just another example of a man objectifying survivors for his own political gain.
The only time any of these men think rape is wrong is when they suspect taking that stance will give them a competitive edge over another man.

The National Park Service was told not to publicize its record-breaking visit data this year.
Why? Probably because the Trump administration is trying to gut it.
You can find this new context on our Responsible Datasets in Context site: www.responsible-datasets-in-context.com/posts/np-data/
It’s 0.003%. Less than 1 dollar per person in the US.
The Trump administration, with Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency, has gutted a small federal agency that provides funding to libraries and museums nationwide.
This threatens student field trips, classes for seniors, and access to digital library services.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services has long received bipartisan support. But after years of trying, President Donald Trump has delivered it a crushing blow.
Like many others I am dismayed by the effort to end IMLS. I know IMLS matters to so many people. I put together the following site to collect and share stories of how "IMLS matters" to people. Please consider submitting a story.

hand-written sign in a window of the IMLS building that says "SOS IMLS"
New — Institute of Museum and Library Sciences employees were allowed back in the building this morning to gather belongings after all being put on admin leave by DOGE yesterday. Supporters have gathered in front of the building and staffers inside have posted a visible sign that says "SOS IMLS."
Established in 1996, the IMLS provides funding to libraries and museums in every U.S. state and territory—primarily supporting essential but low-profile functions such as database infrastructure and collections management.
The IMLS effective shutdown is illegal and devastating.
"Across the nation, universities are eliminating or rebranding DEI offices to avoid federal scrutiny. SIU isn’t backing down."
Great story by Molly Parker about a school with much less $$ than the universities we typically see in the news.

"Without initial funding from IMLS so much the work that we do in digital scholarly communications and cultural heritage would not be possible. And that includes Zotero and Omeka." 📚

Confirmed DOGE is currently inside IMLS headquarters.
Solidarity with all the IMLS staff today.
The email came from from the agency's acting executive secretary.
He asked Kel McClanahan, a national security attorney, if this was legal. "No it is not," he said. It breaks the Federal Records Act. "Classified records are still federal records."
A team of archivists has recreated the pre-Trump CDC website as a live, easy-to-navigate website that should be indexed by Google. The team is hosting it in Europe. Cool project that is sadly necessary:

New research from Costello, Pennycook, and Rand. Can conversations with AI help reduce belief in conspiracy theories? Quite possibly. What’s the mechanism? Evidence production. Let me explain my little-t theory about how this might work.
A German researcher captured the contents of "DEI.gov" before it was put behind a password wall. It contained a list of things USAID was funding filtered through the worst possible light:

We just launched a 16TB archive of every dataset that has been available on data.gov since November. This will be updated day by day as new datasets appear. It can be freely copied, and we're sharing the code behind it to help others make their own archives of data they depend on.
Despite the Trump administration’s efforts, much of the deleted DOJ database can be found on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. And thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot live on ProPublica’s website and other places. 👇
ABC News reported Marco Rubio has been acting as head of the National Archives for weeks. This is news to everyone at the National Archives, including, apparently, the current head of NARA:

UbuWeb Founded 1996 February 1, 2025 A year ago, we decided to shutter UbuWeb. Not really shutter it, per se, but instead to consider it complete. After nearly 30 years, it felt right. But now, with the political changes in America and elsewhere around the world, we have decided to restart our archiving and regrow Ubu. In a moment when our collective memory is being systematically eradicated, archiving reemerges as a strong form of resistance, a way of preserving crucial, subversive, and marginalized forms of expression. We encourage you to do the same. All rivers lead to the same ocean: find your form of resistance, no matter how small, and go hard. It's now or never. Together we can prevent the annihilation of the memory of the world.

Lots of datasets are disappearing from data.gov. This is a good time to preserve critical data stored with the .gov. This piece focuses on climate and environmental research and data, as well as diversity-related data. I've also talked to people who are worried about COVID data.
#DH #DigitalHumanities folks -- this is something we can do to help. We know how to save and archive data.
