This is a cartogram map of the United States depicting land use by different categories. The map distorts state shapes to represent proportional land usage. Key land use types include cow pasture/range (covering much of the central U.S.), private and federal timberland in the Pacific Northwest, corporate timberland in the Southeast, and urban housing/commercial areas in the Northeast. Other categories include agriculture (livestock feed, wheat exports, ethanol/biodiesel, cotton), protected lands (national parks, federal wilderness, state parks), and infrastructure (railroads, airports, highways). Additional specialized land uses include wildfires, golf courses, Christmas tree farms, and maple syrup production.

I think about this map a lot.

Offshore wind is one of the most effective, reliable solutions to meet America’s needs for clean, domestically produced energy. 🌬️

To address climate change, we MUST reduce greenhouse gas emissions while still producing energy to meet our growing electricity needs.

Scientists Race to Gauge Los Angeles Fires’ Impact on Ocean Life Researchers were on an expedition off the LA coast when the wildfires erupted, providing a rare chance to measure toxic effects on the food web in real time.

New: The LA wildfires blew untold tons of toxic ash over the ocean. As the fires broke out, scientists were at the "right place at a horrible time" - on an expedition off the LA coast, giving them a rare chance to gather real-time data on marine impacts. Free link.

As expected, the Trump team is already deleting climate info from government websites. In anticipation, our team at Urban Ocean Lab created a permanent archive of 100+ key resources and published a permanent archive: www.urbanoceanlab.org/resource-hub 👩🏽‍💻

Psst... There is no "energy emergency" in the United States.

What we have is a climate emergency.

A video we made at @mbarinews.bsky.social explaining some functions of #fluorescence in the ocean, and how #bioluminescence is different… but related.

Norway stops deep-sea mining, for now Environmentalists say the practice is destructive.

A small leftwing environmentalist political party in Norway succeeded in blocking plans to mine the sea bed at the bottom of the Arctic, by demanding the government scrap its first licensing round in return for support for the budget reut.rs/4fXwKF6

3 decades ago we identified Scallop Dredging around our island as very detrimental to the health of our seas. BUT to most folk it's "Out of Sight out of Mind" We used the visual image to educate our island community. Now half our island's seabeds out to 3 miles are protected, it was worth it.
