#hottake: What kids mean by "Math is useless" is less about math being used in the real world and more about lack of personal connection they feel to it. The remedy is to show them pieces of math that piqued OUR curiosity, not scientists' out there, since we don't know how they feel either. #MathSky

Spirograph art in blue and green with XOR pattern enabled.

Update: There's this very cool prototype by @fractalkitty.com that my students liked a lot. It does come with the XOR option, layers, and the animation on/off/speed toggle: quality of life! 🤩 a45bcc3f.inquiries-4i5.pages.dev/tools/simula... Image: art by a young kid using it for the first time.

New video, on mechanisms that illustrate the duality between the cube and the octahedron! Here's one of them: a linkage with fabric panels designed by Sabetta Matsumoto.

I was playing around in @desmos.com Geometry with triangles that share the same nine-point circle, and I accidentally made a pretty pattern.

Yes. The "Dune" universe reads as a cautionary dystopia about the wrong choice between (1) making the machines work with and for the people and (2) counter-progressive coup/upraising that rolls back some tech (except for the rulers, in secret), destroys democracy, and spreads feudal slavery.

Snow White and the Seven Bears. The bears sniff out the poison before she ever bites the apple and hibernate in company, so the problematic prince is also a nonstarter. 🐻

Oh, @geogebra.org is VERY accessible. Young kids start playing around right away, and you never see them again. 😅 I guess that's okay if they go into their own rabbit holes once we start with some parametric sliders.

We used a virtual spirograph toy with some students. It's a nice start, and I am looking for more options. www.diffgeom.org/software/Pir...

To me, that sentence translated as, "An in-house data person used AI to pick through a body of work of subject specialists looking for nuggets that align with what the house wants the test to measure." I may be a cynical reader, but that's how the sentence reads to me.

There's rigor and rigor, no? Rigor as in mathematical depth, precision, and connections, evaluated by good peer review. And then, whatever is measured by the standardized tests.

"AI is garbage, bro, it gives you wrong answers like half the time and the other half the time makes you stupid."

Overheard a middle schooler chastising a fellow student for suggesting they use AI. Whole middle school herd started mocking the AI kid.

...We need to let these kids at the tech bros.

Comprehensive presentation of the "Theorem of the Day", starting with a statement of this theorem.

The Five Circle Theorem : Let the five sides of a pentagon ABCDE be extended until they intersect in five points P, Q, R, S and T , say. Then the five circumcircles of triangles BQA, APE, ETD, DSC and CRB intersect with each other in five distinct points, not lying on the pentagon and lying on a common circle.

What email service do you use and like? The last straw from Gmail: trying to remove a tag from only ~200 selected messages, a mundane, one-click task. The response text? "Gmail will do this only for some of the messages, and it may happen over several hours." Yep, and with ~25% fail rate to boot. 😿
