Mathematician Helen Abbott Merrill was born 162 years ago tomorrow. For nearly four decades, she was a tentpole presence at Wellesley college, where she served as dean of the math dep and wrote two college textbooks that were in use throughout the 1910s and 1920s.

The most challenging part of putting this problem in video or book form was to think up a scenario where subtraction is not allowed. I started out with measuring water with jugs, but subtraction is so easy there it’s kind of ridiculous that we’d artificially disallow it. #MathSky #StorySaturday
Alexander Grothendieck (1928 - 2014) in 1970
Today is Alexander Grothendieck's birthday!
He's probably the most important mathematician of the 20th century, but sadly enough almost completely unknown to the general public

Both revolutionized scientific thinking, one through a unifying vision of mathematics and the other of physics.
According to mathematician Luc Illusie, #Grothendieck was a master of generalization.

#Grothendieck revolutionized homological algebra in his famous Tôhoku paper, published in 1957 in Tôhoku Mathematical Journal.

Simply put, Grothendieck's role in #mathematics is comparable to that played by Einstein in physics.

Grothendieck is believed to be one of the sharpest minds of the 20th century (and, in my humble opinion, of all time).
In 1966, he was awarded the Fields Medal for advances in algebraic geometry, homological algebra, and K-theory.

28 March 1928: Alexander Grothendieck was born.
“It is in this gesture of going beyond, to be something in oneself rather than the pawn of a consensus, [...] – it is in this solitary act that one finds true creativity.”

Cube net folding.
There is research on fabricating micropolyhedra using lithographic techniques via self-assembly / self-folding of nets that fold to, e.g., a cube as illustrated. Note the tiny size: 0.2mm. The goal is to minimize mis-foldings.
