THE SUBSTANCE

Director and writer Coralie Fargeat taps into the horror of society's view of aging and value of women and the expectations women place on ourselves.

I clutched my friend's arm harder than any slasher movie during Elisabeth Sparkle's breakdown leading to her date with Fred.

SHIBOYUGI's beautiful and fragile world is an eerie dreamscape, every character looks like a delicate haunted doll. Everything is artificial, weird and delightful. I didn't think I'd enjoy it this much.

Watching the entirety of The Lord of the Rings extended films, on the big screen, in just one weekend, was an insanely immersive experience. Still didn't feel the pass of time. Still cried like a baby. Still can't wait for the next time we get this opportunity again.

What disturbed me the most in Baskin (2015) was the use of one iconic Cannibal Holocaust (1980) track without crediting Riz Ortolani. Just lifting a track from another film without credit isn't a homage... Unless it's based on melodies originally whistled by Garth Marenghi, obviously.

How the hell did I miss out on The Lodge (2019)? The atmosphere from Longlegs (2024) and the way Bring Her Back (2025) does religious horror echoes this film. Which, in return, gestures towards Night of The Hunter (1955) with a sprinkle of The Thing (1982) and its own delightful twist. What a treat.

Another gift Peter Jackson has given the world is Paquita (played by Diana Peñalver) from Braindead (1992), one the most underrated women characters in horror of all time 👌 the fact that she isn't widely recognized as a total HORROR ICON is insane to me.

Alex Forrest is literally a slasher. I'm sick and tired of female slashers being ignored. This is how we overlook gems like this. Case in point:

Not only is it extremely appropriate for the source material (an It-inspred product has never felt so close to the novel, imo), but for the current times as well. "The louder I say I'm happy, the more I believe it so" could be some people's motto. Watch out for those clowns, y'all.

Especially in this AI hellscape we're living in, the art of opening credits can't be understated. It: Wellcome to Derry sets the stage with an uncanny and progressively disturbing atmosphere rich with subversive and carefully crafted imagery.

I'm so enthralled by these opening credits as I was for Succession and Severance. This show might not be as impactful, but every Sunday I find myself absentmindedly singing "A smile is something special, a ribbon is something rare"... The haunting imagery and lyrics are impactful indeed.
