It was especially fascinating to hear the process that Susan went through with various acids and Aqua Regia to produce her beautiful etchings.
It was a very interesting, stimulating and inspiring discussion about their collaborative experience, the overlaps between scientific and artistic process, how sustainability shapes both research and art, and the importance of both art and science in curricula.
It was a pleasure to host this conversation yesterday evening between artist Susan Aldworth, scientist Dr Amanda Jarvis from The University of Edinburgh, and Keira Tucker from ASCUS Art & Science, chaired by our Chief Executive Janet Archer.
By throwing chemicals into the aquatint resin before it was fired onto the plate surface, Aldworth developed a visual equivalence of catalysis– capturing a moment of chemical reaction.
To mirror the ambition of Jarvis’ laboratory to reduce, recycle or replace expensive metals in catalysis, Aldworth decided to work in etching, switching from expensive copper and zinc etching plates to cheaper steel plates.
In 2023 Aldworth was awarded a commission by ASCUS Art & Science to make a series of experimental works in response to Dr Jarvis’ research whose long-term aim is to develop more sustainable catalytic chemistry.
This exhibition by Susan Aldworth is the result of a collaboration with Dr Amanda Jarvis of The University of Edinburgh whose research in sustainable chemistry explores how to make chemical synthesis greener including recycling and replacing precious metals with cheaper, more abundant alternatives.

This Spring we are taking printmaking outside the Studio !
Often working with silkscreen on newsprint, at large-scale and in multiples, Fullerton has consistently used printmaking as a counterpoint to his painting - exploring and exploiting the medium’s inherent ephemerality and potential for mass-production.
This hotel was serving as accommodation for people from around the world seeking asylum in the UK, where Michael got to know them well and hear their individual stories of how they got to the UK.
For this exhibition Michael Fullerton created an incredible series of portrait paintings of people he met during the five months he lived and worked at the Hilltop Hotel in Carlisle, Cumbria.
It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Michael Fullerton on two screenprints for his show at the City Arts Centre. Sunday is the last chance to see it and we highly recommend you go and check it out before it is taken down.

Our Screenprint Technician, James Harrison, worked with Michael on two screenprints for the show.
This course will give you insight into working with the subtlety of wood, its grain, and how to print multiple colours with it. The skills learned will also be applicable to lino printing.

Through the EP Editions programme Edinburgh Printmakers invites established artists to collaborate with our world class studio technicians to broaden their artistic practices through exploration of printmaking processes.
Aldworth's new prints connect with and expand her existing practice, in terms of subject matter and experimenting with print processes. Her work over the last 3 decades has explored human identity - migration and grief, part of the human story, are the themes of these prints.
Alongside Susan Aldworth's exhibitions Belongings and Modern Alchemy, showing from April-June 2026, she has created 5 new prints in collaboration with Edinburgh Printmakers as part of the EP Editions programme.
Prints: 1. Belonging 2. Passing Through 3. Transition (Arch) 4. Crossings
On the 24th of March, Studio Coordinator Namhara Byron Low led a 'Printing From the Bins' Workshop for the Net Zero Symposium.
Net Zero Press is a collective of Scottish printmakers and organisations working towards sustainable printmaking, funded by the University of St. Andrews.
The Cyanotype or ‘blue print’ is one of photography’s oldest printing methods. Reminiscent of the alchemists of yesteryear you can use a negative image on acetate, a drawing on tracing paper, or even real objects, to create a stunning image without a camera.
