Minister warned as gates and doors 'left open' at HMP Millsike A watchdog has highlighted concerns about security and high levels of violence at HMP Millsike.

Tragically predictable. Building bigger prisons could never be the solution to the complexities surrounding overcrowding & increased violence and self harm 😢 #PrisonOT

Five minutes more exercise and 30 minutes less sitting could help millions live longer Research finds minor changes in physical activity could hugely reduce number of premature deaths Just five extra minutes of exercise and half an hour less sitting time each day could help millions of people live longer, according to research highlighting the potentially huge population benefits of making even tiny lifestyle changes. Until now, evidence about reducing the number of premature deaths assumed that everyone must meet specific targets, overlooking the positives of even minor increases in physical activity. Waiting for the Out is the next great show about masculinity The BBC drama – about a young philosophy professor who takes a job in a men's prison – picks up the conversation where Adolescence left off

Amazing! Andy Wests book 'The life inside' has been made into a BBC series which is a must watch. Although I knew Andy prior to our both landing in HMP Pentonville, I've come to know him better through his writing. It's very moving & I highly recommend a read.

‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends in the right direction’
Theodore Parker

Discussing with students whether the prisons could ever improve. Reflected on Parker’s quote being hard to believe, but harder not to believe. The current status quo is unsustainable #ForensicOT

Taught a wonderfully engaged group of students about #OccupationalTherapy in prisons at YorkStJohn today. I’m increasingly reassured by the increased understanding of adverse childhood experiences & the more permissive attitudes students have towards those who offend. Change is occurring #ForensicOT

Yes, that’s certainly more tricky when external. I worked alongside many such initiatives in the community. I recall fantastic work, though absence of nuance when dealing with complex cases & our more specialist Ax needed. We def need to be very clear what it is we have to offer that is different.

We our working hard to help them understand that nothing is diversion and everything they do is working towards a rehabilitative pathway in the end

It’s imperfect, there is work to do to establish how we work together but differ, but we are getting there…

Not sure how your services are structured Suz, but although our activity workers are under nursing numbers & budgets, our enlightened matron put them under my management. That way we have them all working more like TIs under OT philosophy & guidance so they
support our aims rather than dilute them

I am afraid I can’t manage that much info coming at me so keep my following low. I follow all forensic OTs I can find, but stay sane by managing social media info flow quite carefully! I am trying to increase engagement when interesting posts come my way as my contribution ☺️

I’m making a concerted effort to engage again. I do question whether social media has simply had its time for OT, but it was so rich when at its peak. I’ve made lasting networks & friendships & gained more great work opportunities that I can juggle. Well done for plugging away to bring it alive Sue

167. Faith, Depression, and Finding Calm in the Chaos (Professor Mark Williams) - Alastair Campbell From Parliament to Prison, how can people find calm in chaotic environments? How does one cope with grief during the festive period? What are some successful ways to combat depression? Rory and Alasta...

Great to hear the wonderful Mark Williams talking about the heartening work we did together bringing #Mindfulness into prisons, in this weeks ‘the rest is politics’. The #OccupationalTherapy ‘wellbeing centre’ I created also cited as an example of good practice☺️

‘Bills keep going higher’: community ‘warm spaces’ on the rise in the UK As places such as Walworth Living Room step in to help people in need, charities lament lack of government help When Fatma Mustafa began attending Walworth Living Room, a community project in south London, a few years ago, she began to feel like it was her second home. The registered “warm space” is designed to feel like a living room: comfy sofas, a communal table, activities and food in a warm environment. Mustafa, 48, says that on universal credit (UC) it is hard to cover bills and easy to fall into debt. Attending three days a week, she says, cuts costs on energy and groceries. Continue reading...

‘We’ve got more in common than what divides us’: a Muslim-Jewish kitchen in Nottingham counters hate and hunger As antisemitism and Islamophobia rise, a community centre brings people together over shared meals, offering an antidote to food poverty, social isolation and division * Donate to the Guardian Charity Appeal 2025 here * Communities are our defence against hatred. Now, more than ever, we must invest in hope It’s 2.30pm on a Wednesday afternoon and the Himmah Hub, a community centre in Nottingham, is abuzz with activity. Crates of leftover supermarket food are being carried inside, trestle tables assembled, and volunteers are arriving to prepare meals that will be served in a few hours’ time to anyone who needs one – a queue has already begun to form outside. This is the Salaam Shalom kitchen, known as SaSh, a joint Muslim-Jewish project set up in 2015, and based on one of the core tenets of both faith groups: bringing people together through food. It also draws on a north Indian tradition of community meals, with food prepared collectively and duties shared across the village, Sajid Mohammed, director of the Muslim-led social justice initiative Himmah, explains.
