I moved to Brisbane in 2014 and am saddened that I did not attend the Evil Within themed Fright Night at Warner brothers Movie World them park down at the Gold Coast for Halloween.

The box of the Australian PS3 release of Evil Within. "The Evil Within" is in bold red text. The words are arranged vertically. The T, I and I become a lobotomy tool piercing through the title and seemingly about to pierce Sebastian's eye. In the bottom left corner with the Australian classification sticker. A white R 18+ on a black background.
“What kind of place this is?” It is hell Sebastian. I found it interesting that the game was released in Australia due to the graphic violence. But the R 18+ rating came out in 2013 18 months prior to the release of Evil Within. Which honestly is lucky otherwise it would not have been released.
Favourite scene. Probably the Oda and Juli linked part. From the saw ass water tank, to the very simple autopsy puzzle. Before being dragged into hell.
I love being able to look around in the title screen as if I am strapped onto a gurney.
In game footage of Evil Within, Sebastian stands on a ledge looking at the tops of a cityscape. There is a Billboard in the distance emblazoned with the poster for a fake movie called Chainsaw 3D with a chainsaw on it. It is stylised in the same way that the original Saw posters were styled.
There is a head with brain exposed with probes in them. The unfortunate subject suspiciously looks a lot like the actor that plays Jigsaw from the famous horror franchise Saw.
Other than Resident Evil the game evokes memories of the torture horror genre of the noughties. Saw, Hostel and a Serbian Film. Honestly, the brown aesthetic of the PS3 era worked with Evil Within. It gave me the impression of rust, blood and charnel smells attributed to the aforementioned genre.
A photo of the front cover of the Art of Psycho Break (also known as The Evil Within). The test is both in Japanese and English set on a backdrop of a brain wrapping barbed wire.
Photo of the Art of Psycho Break. It shows the concept art of Juli Kidman. In numerous differing outfits.

Anyone having played Resident Evil probably wouldn’t be surprised that Evil Within was directed by the former's creator, Shinji Mikami.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Juli Kidman was voiced by Jennifer Carpenter; best known from the Exorcism of Emily Rose and Dexter.
Concept art.
In game footage of Sebastian Castellanos lying on the ground wounded shooting Ruben Victoriano as he emerges from a giant amalgam. The image has a distinct red brown rust tinge.
Evil Within it is a collection of set pieces that only piece together because they are in a nightmare within their own minds. Has the pacing of the House of the Dead rather than Silent Hill. Despite its jank and camera, Evil Within melds stealth and combat nicely compared to other titles.
100% this. I wrote about this in the context of TTRPGs here idlecartulary.com/2025/04/08/w...

Holy shit DOG-DOG was one addictive party game. Grab three friends and lead your serpentine-flying-dragon and blast your opponents into oblivion and become DOG-GOD. It will get you saying AGAIN-AGAIN
A cosy clicker you visit the Isle of Lost Bees in search of mysterious bees. Devoid of human life you plant flowers to entice Australian native bees to your bee Hotel. There they help you pollinate flowers and collect pollen, while you progress your science, plant more flowers and buff up your bees.
Matchstick -Cosmic Flame- Like a moth to the flame I was drawn to this Morrowwind style adventure. I navigated a dark foreboding train station, solving puzzles to return lost suitcases to three anthropomorphised moths. All while it seemed like stars were slowly exploding in the night sky.
Last night Netherworld and Zed Games hosted Indie Dev Night showcasing a selection of Queensland made independent games. The games that stood out to me the most included…
At a glance I imagine it would work well with point buy systems like Gumshoe or games with stress/strain gauges.
I think it might even be a more effective way to resolve the Confrontation Phase in Tales from the Loop.
I wrote an article about how skills function in the Cosmere RPG and now Plotweaver RPG, and how talents disrupt that dynamic to make your character feel awesome!

As a system safety engineer I am a sucker for a flowchart but in addition the write up is thoughtful analysis of how a 'system' can influence play and narrative.
Looking at the last time I wrote something similar back in 2022. Interesting to see what I chose with these prompts...

TTRPG discourse is like: "Sell me on Apocalypse World. I hate it. Partly because the people I play with don't actually play according to the rules and I think that's the game's fault. Also, I've made up a thing about it I don't like. Also, my friends don't like acts of collaborative creativity."
Handmade miniature furniture arranged on a green cutting mat. At the centre, a small reclining chair with a bright yellow seat and backrest sits elevated on a wooden block; it has a white frame with thin legs and wooden armrests, and a slightly curved, relaxed posture. Nearby are other miniatures: a green upholstered chair, a small wooden table with a book, and a test strip of a green rug.
I'm really happy with the yellow recliner, made from the corner of a plastic sandwich container it was papier mache'd with yellow crepe paper.
Also experimenting with some rug dying and submerging them in a water glue solution for it wrinkle effect.

Maybe more wry than comical? Maybe for pre-gens I'll try and aim for a similar level of archetype. Just not too sure how to balance the weird in Laundry Files that Stress is excellent doing.
A Miroboard containing the framework for a Nights Black Agents adventure. The text is a arrange stylistically in the shape of a downward pointing triangle. The text is dotted with inspiration including; Existenz, Hostel 2, Possessor, Atomic Blonde and Evil Within.
I have been playing a lot of Evil Within and watching Slow Horses.
I couldn't shake a Night's Black Agents adventure but revolving around a group of fuck ups using sleep intrusion tech.
But do I lean closer to a grittier procedural adventure or a comical like the Laundry Files.

Very alarmed to hear that RMIT is threatening disciplinary action against a student merely for posting *public info* about the university's ties to weapons manufacturers.

I would be mad not to spruik the game I'm currently play testing, a game in a blighted haunted world.
BUT I have also used Red Markets to run Stalker-Picnic-Metro inspired games with minor modifications. Works well to simulate the economic horrors of stalkers.

Working on a "What is zonecore?" thing to capture the essence of the Roadside Picnic / Stalker genre. Some call it the "rust & radiation" genre.
If you have examples of tabletop games that you feel fit that idea (e.g. zones, stalkers, bureaucracy, powerful artifacts, blighted land) please reply.
