Hospitals before data centres: How the Netherlands prioritises electricity demand | Ingeniøren The Netherlands is struggling to find space for new substations and has opted for a different approach to prioritising new electricity consumers. A Danish researcher sees promise in the Dutch model.

Yes, for example getting grid connection in order to electrify faster, so we get cheaper energy and less energy import dependency. Which is a huge issue currently in Denmark, very much driven by data center demand:

I don’t live in USA, but still I cherish these nuggets of hope. Not only for the people living in USA, but for all of us, given the power that the US leadership can wield over the rest of the world.

Small green circle intersecting a larger yellow circle.

In the Venn diagram of humanity, the set of people who are ready to give advice intersects with, but is much larger than, the set of people who know what they are doing.

And those who know enough to give advice may refrain from doing so because they’re aware of all the nuances in the issue. Or if they actually try to convey those nuances they’re not heard (or worse, scolded for not taking a clear stance).

Interesting - this is something I've been occasionally thinking about as well, and I tend to agree. "Populism" doesn't quite describe what the far right international is pursuing.

New tech allows solar panels to make electricity even from raindrops Researchers in Spain have devised a hybrid device that can generate energy using sunlight as well as raindrops.

Solar panels in the rain? No problem.

I can understand why the tech firms would want this. But why would the EU Commission succumb to this? What upside could there possibly be?

Indeed.

Thanks for this well-done thread.

This piece about unclear goals and lack of continuity among political decision makers is all to familiar.

In Denmark a large 15yr infrastructure plan was decided in 2021 and now all who negotiated the plan are gone. So the arguments for the increasingly silly projects are ‘because we agreed it’ 🤦🏻‍♂️

Jeg hører at i Danmark er ‘positivlisten’ for hvilket udstyr der må kobles på elnettet en barriere for V2G.

Kender du til andre barrierer?

“… if investors really want to go all-in on health and make the greatest impact on our well-being, there’s no more important target than climate change.” 🎯

Besides the examples you mention it is also worth mentioning walking and cycling as beneficial to both climate and health.

Investors’ Ozempic Mania Could Be Bad for Our Health When did climate change stop being the most important issue of our time? According to a bunch of investors, quite recently.

In which I argue that greenhushing is preventing us from seeing the climate crisis for what it is: an existential threat to our health

Sometimes it's hard to understand the causes of climate change. While the basic idea -- we emit greenhouse gases, which warm the planet -- is well known, it's easy to get lost in the details.

But here's a summary with some more detail -- showing the fundamental sources & sinks of warming pollution.

Most developed countries have now submitted the 2026 editions of their formal greenhouse gas emissions inventories to the UNFCCC.

Wild symptom of a broken epistemic environment: in 2015 the evidence showed the Clean Power Plan to be a weak, inexpensive regulation. But climate opponents said it would have huge costs, and climate advocates said it would have huge benefits.
And the Chief Justice was fooled.

I am not a lawyer, but am I reading correctly that the majority opinion cited the concern of “irreparable harm” to the coal industry (which employs ~40,000 people) with no mentions of the “irreparable harm” higher CO2 emissions could bring to the population of (at the time) ~7,500,000,000 people?

Two striking things about the new surge of far-right ideology and activity inadvertently confirm that the changes over the past several decades have been immense and impactful. One is how these brutal politics are a backlash against the vision of interconnection. The other is in how the right sees the many elements—environmentalism, feminism, queer rights, equality, racial justice, and inclusion, even kindness—as related, as part of the same cosmology (or in their terms, agenda)—all part of the new world struggling to be born and sharing some ideological essentials. The dying old world is furious at all of it and lurches into monstrosity in reaction to it. I've often thought our enemies believe in us even when we don't believe in ourselves, and this is confirmation that they believe we've changed the world in consequential ways, and with a coherent vision.
