„Die Angriffe auf von der Tann sind Teil von Bestrebungen, kritische Berichterstattung insgesamt zu delegitimieren und Journalisten zu diskreditieren.“ Christian Meier, Israelkorrespondent der F.A.Z., über die Versuche, eine deutsche Reporterin in Israel zu verleumden:

Many Germans have drawn the wrong lessons from the Holocaust and their history.I'm afraid I was one of them. But it's never too late to question yourself. For further reading:

Jason Stanley zum 9. November Ein Jude, schrieb der liberale Rabbiner Leo Baeck, fragt nicht, was er glauben soll, sondern was er tun soll. Was sollen wir heute tun? Eine Rede, die am 9. November in der Frankfurter Synagoge nicht ...

This is not the case, as shown by the fact that Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published the speech. Still, there are indeed problems with freedom of expression in Germany when it comes to Israel’s crimes.

Of course, it is also a fallacy to conclude from this unfinished speech that freedom of expression in Germany is completely broken.

After reading this one can ask: what in this remarkable speech is antisemitic? Nothing. But in Germany sometimes Just saying or mentioning the obvious can be problematic.

“(…) Hannah Arendt clearly recognized the unequal treatment of the Palestinians and advocated for a state that grants Jews and Palestinians equal rights as equal citizens. Hannah Arendt would probably no longer be allowed to speak in Germany today.”

“It is offensive to be lectured by non-Jews about who is and who is not Jewish. It is unbearable when those doing the lecturing are Germans.”

“In effect, the Germans have arrogated to themselves the power to determine who is Jewish and who is not. I was taught from an early age that this is antisemitism.”

“Although the liberal German-Jewish tradition is not compatible with a state that creates second-class citizens based on religion or ethnicity, Germany seems to have decided that only those Jewish voices count that unconditionally support Israel.”

“Criticizing Israel’s atrocities in the Gaza Strip, on the other hand, is not antisemitism. Criticizing Israel’s longstanding unequal treatment of the Palestinian people is also not antisemitism.”

“It is antisemitism to show up in our houses of worship or Jewish schools and yell at us because of Israel’s actions. Holding individual Jews responsible for Israel’s actions is antisemitism.”

“Supporting the mass murder of our people by Hamas on Oct. 7 is intolerable antisemitism. It is equally intolerable antisemitism to support the expulsion of Jews from Israel without at the same time, (…) supporting the expulsion of all white Europeans from the USA and Canada.”

“My father, a German-Jewish intellectual, always rejected the idea of a state that privileges one religion. He always saw in the dispossession and loss experienced by the Palestinians something similar to his own family’s history.”

“My mother is deeply committed to the idea of a Jewish nation-state. (…) ‘When I was little, all the armed people were against me, they were my enemies, and I was afraid. Here, all the armed people are on my side,’ she said.

“Others simply condemn the apartheid system of the State of Israel and feel connected to the fate of the Palestinian people.”

“In the spirit of these liberal ideals, some Jewish intellectuals reject the idea of a state based on ethnicity, race, or religion - even if it is our own.”

“The loss of the liberal intellectual tradition of German-speaking Jews is a great tragedy. ‘German greatness’ was historically only ever threatened by the destruction of its religious minorities, not by their flourishing.”

“In the twentieth century, German Jews won more than twenty Nobel Prizes. From our mathematicians and philosophers to our writers and thinkers—the modern world of culture, art, and science would simply be unimaginable without the contribution of German-speaking Jews.”

So what was it that Stanley said? What caused the expulsion of the son of Jewish Shoah survivors, which is now drawing much more attention to his words than they would otherwise have received? Here are some excerpts from the speech:

On its homepage, the community had previously announced the guest speaker’s appearance in grand words: “The son of Jewish Shoah survivors is one of the world’s most influential intellectuals in the fields of political ideologies, antisemitism, and the culture of remembrance.”

In a nutshell: Stanley had been invited to Germany to give a speech in a synagogue on the historic date of November 9th. But when he mentioned not only German crimes in 1938, but Israeli crimes in Gaza today, he was forced to leave the stage and was thrown out.

RF - Nominierungen 2025
