Terrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (TAO) - A Fault-Cored Anticline Boundary Element Model Incorporating the Combined Fault Slip and Buckling Mechanisms We develop a folding boundary element model in a medium containing a fault and elastic layers to show that anticlines growing over slipping reverse fa...

Found a fun little article in TAO, our local earth science journal, on (gasp!) modeling of fault-bend fold. Paper is led by Wen-Jeng Huang, currently a professor at NCU. Also we have the best acronym for a journal. tao.cgu.org.tw/index.php/ar...

Linear-viscous flow of temperate ice Accurately modeling the deformation of temperate glacier ice, which is at its pressure-melting temperature and contains liquid water at grain boundaries, is essential for predicting ice sheet discharg...

Check out our paper that came out in @science.org today. It uses some really cool experiments to explore the rheology of temperate ice. We find that contrary to colder ice this warm ice has a value of n=1!!

It just means that in addition to shear, there is also implosion or explosion in the source. These cookies are shortbread with macha powder as the coloring 🍵

No insight into the earthquakes in California from me, but here are some focal mechanism cookies. Most of them are strike slips but some with non-double-couple component 😉

Something very close to my heart, my alma mater NCU, and my research. PTS Taiwan made an in-depth report on active fault survey in Taiwan. Just aired and no caption yet.

I was reminded of this great book 'Escape From Model Land' by Erica Thompson that I read a couple of years ago — it takes a very broad view of the term 'model'; i.e., not just sophisticated numerical models but also conceptual models and narratives, the ways we explain the world — highly recommended

Might be a good time to read up on the history of science & how it's fundamentally a social process (as it is carried out by humans) & how it's deeply intertwined with power relations. Decades of literature! Will be super helpful when having (yet another) debate about science and politics! 🧪⚕️🛟

so a lot of people are talking about the 4b movement.

a lot of western women, specifically younger ones, who seem to have largely heard about it through social media via other western, non-korean people, or by articles that cover it with a tinge of orientalist exoticism.

if i may, some thoughts:

This story hits close to home in many ways – back in midcoast Maine this summer, I listened to much discussion of the RT fallout.

Excellent reporting by Simson & Rabinowitz @canarymediainc.bsky.social, and from @jtemple.bsky.social before that:

A map of hurricane Beryl’s pathway superimposed on sea surface temperature anomalies created by the BBC based on NOAA data.

This figure illustrates how record warm ocean temperatures fueled Hurricane Beryl, causing it to intensify faster, reach greater strength, maintain that strength for longer, and likely dump more rain than it would have otherwise. Source: www.bbc.com/news/article...
