Biodiversity of #rainforest can recover within decades when located in highly connected landscapes because animal mobility drives natural recovery. Our @reassemblynet.bsky.social synthesis paper is out @nature.com: tinyurl.com/4w24a96b

Nature conservation e.g. by NGO Fundacion Jocotoco, can help to bend the curve of biodiversity decline. The graph shows how large parts of the diversity comes back due to natural regeneraion of a rainforest. It illustrates the main finding of our study published in Nature: Protection restores 90% of species diversity in 30 years.

Good news! #Biodiversity🦜🐜🐒🐸 in a tropical #rainforest 🌴🇪🇨can naturally recover quickly 📈 (if the conditions are suitable = enough surrounding forest). Our new study in #Nature

🚨 For those with access to collections of bird specimens: we are looking for collaborators who can quickly measure bulbuls/greenbuls (Pycnonotidae) for a project on intraspecific trait variation. We need 100s specimens measured from common species in return for co-authorship. Anyone up for it? 🧪🌐🪶

The Functional Ecology group celebrating in Mainz

We had a little Functional Ecology group celebration yesterday. Coming to think of why this academic journey was worth it, it became apparent that it's all about people at the end. It's a big privilege to work and have worked with so many great and inspiring people over many years. Thanks to all!

All the happy participants of the traits workshop in the garden of the venue at Bad Homburg

Our @sgn.one workshop organized together with @josephtobias.bsky.social and Susanne Fritz was enlightening, fun and will surely lead to many future interactions and outputs on how plant/animal traits translate into functions. Thanks to all for your excellent ideas and very respectful discussions! 🌐

Delayed recovery of seed-dispersal interactions after deforestation Landim et al. show that seed-dispersal interactions require about two decades to functionally recover in tropical forests in Ecuador, but the recovery time of seed-dispersal functions is delayed in pa...

@annarl.bsky.social used the interaction functional space combining plant and animal #traits to show that the recovery of functional diversity of seed-dispersal interactions is delayed by about 20 years after deforestation @reassemblynet.bsky.social 🧮➕📏

We simulated how avian seed dispersal shapes connectivity b/w forest patches. What really matters: fruit diversity increases dispersal, especially to distant patches. Trait matching between interacting bird and plant species is widespread globally! Yet its importance for avian seed dispersal is not just about complementarity among consumers but it depends on the resource traits in a community 🧪🌐 Now out in Ecology Letters: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

A first-year pygmy cormorant resting on a branch above the water.

The first pygmy cormorants have
bred in SE Germany in 2022 and they continue to expand. Similar trends occur for many other cormorant species globally, likely due to higher food availability and better legal protection. This first year bird is the first at my local patch in #Mainz. Success stories!
