Alicante volunteers plant 1,000 trees in major reforestation drive Alicante recently celebrated a successful Spring Reforestation project in Mount Orgegia, which saw some 1,000 volunteers plant more than 1,000 trees, shrubs and seeds in an area of 10,000 square metres. The project, which took place on Saturday, March 21, was part of an initiative called Alicante Renace, aimed at increasing biodiversity in the area, as well as ecological awareness and recovery. Hundreds of new plants introduced to the Mount Orgegia area The volunteers planted roughly 700 trees, 300 Mediterranean shrubs, 14 large carob trees and around one million herbaceous seeds in the Mount Orgegia area, a park that covers 77 hectares in the northernmost area of the Alicante province. The project is essential for the ecological recovery of the area, as well as promoting the biodiversity of the flora and fauna that call the park home. The trees, shrubs and herbaceous species improve the soil stability, promote water infiltration and increase the area’s resilience against climate change. Reforestation scenarios shape global and regional temperature outcomes Limiting global warming to 2 °C or less likely necessitates large-scale carbon dioxide removal strategies in addition to rapid decarbonization1. While technological carbon dioxide removal methods face cost and scalability barriers2, forest-based approaches offer a compelling alternative3. Afforestation and reforestation are widely recognized for their cost-effectiveness and co-benefits for biodiversity and water quality4,5. Global commitments like the EU’s Nature Restoration Law6 underline their policy relevance. The climate impact of forests includes both biogeochemical (BGC) cooling from carbon sequestration and biogeophysical (BGP) effects driven by changes in albedo, evapotranspiration, and surface roughness7,8. BGP effects are highly latitude-dependent: high-latitude reforestation can cause local warming by reducing surface albedo over snow9,10, whereas tropical reforestation typically cools via enhanced evapotranspiration7. Non-local climate effects, mediated by atmospheric and oceanic responses, can further modify the net climate impact11,12. Given the growing interest in reforestation and to guide policy, various global maps have been developed to identify suitable reforestation areas (which we refer to as “reforestation potentials”) and quantify their carbon sequestration potential4,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30. However, estimates of both potential area (150 to over 1000 Mha) and carbon uptake until 2100 (130 to 750 GtCO2; reducing cumulative emissions excluding from land use under SSP2-4.5 by 4–25%31) vary dramatically. BrewDog sold highland estate for knockdown price after abandoning reforestation plans The self-styled “punk” beer company BrewDog sold its Highland estate for a knockdown price after abandoning its efforts to plant Scotland’s “biggest ever forest” there. BrewDog’s co-founder James Watt claimed its Lost Forest project at Kinrara in the Cairngorms national park would cover a “staggering area” and capture tens of millions of tonnes of CO2 during its lifetime. The brewing company paid £8.5m for the estate in 2020. Watt said it would showcase the company’s efforts to make Brewdog carbon neutral by planting millions of trees, restoring degraded peatland and promoting ecotourism. But in October last year Kinrara was sold for an undisclosed price to the “regenerative capitalist” carbon investment firm Oxygen Conservation after Watt was replaced as BrewDog’s chief executive and it posted losses of £37m. Oxygen Conservation used a controversial loophole in Scotland’s land registration rules to avoid making the price publicly available without paying a fee, claiming the brewer wanted confidentiality. However, land registration records seen by the Guardian show that Oxygen Conservation paid £8.85m for Kinrara, a fraction more than BrewDog paid for it five years ago.
