“There are more than 12,000 children in the care system than a decade ago and our care system is in crisis. Yet despite the evidence on the benefits of family group conferences, this groundbreaking research has highlighted that the vast majority of children in need or at risk are not being offered a family group conference, and that those who are disabled, older or from ethnic minorities may be even less likely to be offered one than other children. The findings highlight the urgent need for local and national leaders to address this, in the interests of children and their families, and to the benefit of society and the public purse.”
Today, important new research funded by @foundationsww.bsky.social & conducted by @wearecoram.bsky.social, in partnership with Family Rights Group & Cardiff University, reveals striking variations in access to family group conferences (FGCs) for families across England.

A card showing an photo of Max Stanford, Managing Director of Research at Coram and author of the report, and his quote: “This is an incredibly timely and important piece of research that points to the need to ensure better access to FGCs for families through improved referrer knowledge and processes, as well as capacity within FGC services to support families throughout the FGC process. It also highlights the need for the collection of national data on FGC access and take up and more research into the barriers and enablers for older children, those with a disability and those from ethnic minority groups.”
Family Group Conferences can divert children from entering care, but our research shows significant barriers in access. Max Stanford (@wearecoram.bsky.social) highlights what we need to ensure the FGC offer is improved for all families and children.

Our Childcare Survey 2026 shows that less than half (44%) of local authorities in England report having enough childcare for at least 75% of early years children with SEND in their area, and this falls to 23% for school aged children with SEND: www.coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/chi...
Gaps in availability of childcare for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is one of the most concerning and consistent findings of our Childcare Survey over the last 25 years: www.coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/chi...
Disadvantaged children are being priced out of early years education. Families not eligible for childcare entitlements pay an average of £189 per week for a part-time nursery place for a child under two. #ChildcareSurvey2026 www.coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/chi...
For families eligible for the funded childcare entitlement (now 30 hours), a part-time place may now be free during term-time. But costs have risen in England for parents not eligible for the funded entitlement. Childcare Survey 2026: www.coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/chi...
Our Childcare Survey 2026 shows year-on-year rise in childcare costs for under-twos in England over 25 years, until expansion of funded entitlements in 2024-25 brought the cost of p/t childcare for eligible working parents back to 2005 level: www.coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/chi...
