We will hold two discussion sessions in the next #IZAZ workshop. In past workshops, these discussion sessions have been pivotal in advancing community efforts. So - what do you think the theme of these discussions should be? 🤔💭

Sedimentary ancient DNA is seriously shaking up how we study the past, and I'm very happy to be quoted in this Nature feature😅. Cool piece on sedaDNA, what it can do and where things get messy (literally, in the dirt) @erc.europa.eu @matrixerc.bsky.social @icarehb.bsky.social

Meet the ERC Matrix Project team!
We introduce Sofia Kouki, PhD student working on archaeoinformatics at @icarehb.bsky.social.
Sofia applies computational methods to micromorphological analysis and explores how artificial intelligence can complement the work of micromorphologists.
Do you need to clean your teeth? And if so, how? 🦷
The answer is YES, at least for Pleistocene teeth. Here, we show you why that is the case, and find a couple of good methods: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New paper is out!
We and welkergroup.bsky.social show that proteins from resin-impregnated sediment blocks can reveal faunal diversity at the microscale.

Just out, our new paper "The state of the late Quaternary megafauna extinction debate...". We review the various perspectives, methods, and datasets which have been used to explore the extinction of many large animals. Was it humans, climate, or a mix of both? The debate continues!
Really happy to say that this paper is out now! 🦣🦴
It was a lot of work, but we identified some interesting trends and themes.
📄 New paper 📣 of @matrixerc.bsky.social & @welkergroup.bsky.social! We show that microstratigraphic-scale #paleoproteomics works in intact sediments - opening new ways to explore ancient ecosystems & hominin behaviour 🌍🦴

📣Paper alert📣 Is it possible to use #palaeoproteomics to identify the taxonomy of bone fragments in resin-embedded sediment blocks, enabling study of past faunal community composition at a microstratigraphic scale? 🦴🐮 🦌 We decided to test this, and the results are now out: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...
Excited to share our new study in @natcomms.nature.com. It reveals surprising protein variability in birds 🐦, reshaping how we use ancient proteins to reconstruct the past. Curious about the implications? Read the paper here: rdcu.be/eJi3h. With @beademarch.bsky.social

👥 Meet the team behind the ERC Matrix Project!
🔬 Today: Vera Aldeias, PI of Matrix and a geoarchaeologist decoding past human behaviour through sediments.
🧬 Vera’s team uses ancient DNA & proteins in soils to trace modern humans’ arrival in Europe & Neanderthals’ disappearance.

The MATRIX Project, ERC Starting Grant, led by @veraaldeias.bsky.social and based at @icarehb.bsky.social, explores the replacement of Neanderthals by early modern humans by analyzing intact blocks of sediment as archives of ancient DNA, proteins, and lipids.
Follow us and visit matrix.icarehb.com

The ERC Project MATRIX explores one of the big questions in our past: how Neanderthals disappeared as modern humans spread across Europe. Meet the team behind it and learn more about our research on sediments, ancient DNA, proteins, lipids & human evolution
