The day after Chanukah, a man runs into the doctor’s office with a latke stuck in one ear, chocolate gelt in the other, and a jelly donut up his nose. He yells, “Doc, help! What’s wrong with me?” The doctor replies, “Well, now the holiday is over, you need to start eating right.”

And bless this year with Shalom in its many shades:
Peace of mind,
Peace of heart,
Peace for the world.

And let us say: Amen.

May this new year be a Shanah Tova,
A good year,
A year of gratitude and growth,
In which we weave wisdom from wounds,
Craft courage from chaos,
And find faith in the face of fear.

As the calendar turns,
May our hearts return-
To kindness that lifts,
To generosity that transforms,
To Torah (wisdom) that transcends.

Holy One,
Help us to hear the heartbeats of humanity,
To heal with our hands
And hold hope in our hearts.
May we uncover the sparks of holiness
Hidden in the everyday.

A Prayer for the Secular New Year
By Paul Kipnes

Source of beginnings,
We stand at the threshold of time,
Toes touching the tides of tomorrow.
Teach us to treasure time:
To taste the sweetness of its swift seconds,
To seek truth amidst its trials,
To trust in Your embrace when the days feel dim.

photo of Regina Jonas in robes and holding a book.

#OnThisDay, 27 Dec 1935, Regina Jonas was ordained as a rabbi in Berlin, the first known ordination of a woman.

After her arrest in 1942, she ministered in a ghetto until she was transported to Auschwitz in 1944. She was probably killed on arrival.

I found myself standing before the entwined lives of Chuck & Carol, whose love was so profound that even death could not untangle their bond. And I witnessed 2 young souls—Lielle & Kaia, twins on the threshold of adulthood—renewing their shared commitment to Torah
