Ottawa is going forward with a pilot project for bus lanes on Bank Street. Mostly rush-hour only, with a few 24-hour sections.
Businesses complaining about parking.
But arterials are for moving people, and thereโs far more space to park on the side streets. People are allergic to a short walk?

Many drivers found streetcars annoying, in part because drivers had to stop for passengers boarding and alighting from them. Their annoyance fed accusations that streetcars interfere with โtrafficโ (i.e. with driving). ...
โLetโs plan public transit with the goal of being maximally useful to human beings, expanding their access to opportunity.
That means designing the right lines first and then picking the technology, not falling in love with a technology and then designing a line around its limitations.โ
โItโs not just the residents. Itโs kind of crazy that we live on an Island where tourism is so prominent where tourists canโt get around unless they have a rental automobile. Itโs not very accommodating or hospitable to say, hitchhike,โ Youds continued.
Same thing for the Island on the Atlantic.
Another important case of pluralistic ignorance, much as we found with transport policy. Policymakers really have to start using more systematic methods to find where the public's views are
โCutting $5 billion from transit funding sends the wrong signal at exactly the wrong time. These cuts will hurt #transit users and directly undermine Canadaโs climate commitments & affordability goals. The government cannot & should not renege on their promise.โ
โ Sam Hersh @environmentaldefence.ca
โBy cutting solutions that help people save on their travel, the government is not helping households reduce their transportation costs. Yet #publictransit is a project of national interest that the government should prioritize by increasing investments.โ Marc-Andrรฉ Viau @equiterre.bsky.social
ยป
"Public #transit is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to reduce emissions while connecting people to #jobs, #schools & #housing. Pulling federal support mid-stream creates unnecessary instability for municipalities and could delay transit-oriented housing Canadians desperately need."

Street capacity is a public resource to be allocated in the public interest.

#Firefighters and #paramedics should loudly support transit-only lanes (which, despite the name, are open to emergency response vehicles).
โThrowing more buses into the heap to just have them sit in traffic is counterproductive when what we really need is to get the bus out of the traffic" - Austin.
We make transit fail because we prioritize car journeys more.

We often write about the benefits of transit (+ walking and cycling), but shouldn't the advocacy really be about raising awareness about the benefits of reducing car dependency? And helping drivers along with advice for navigating the area without a car?

Toronto's expanding rail network looks nice on map but the disconnect between Lines 4 and 6 is a real problem, and it will get works if 6t ever starts running faster than the bus it replaced.
I warned them about this years ago.
Grid cities need grid transit networks.
Such a bad news day. We should be investing more in public transit. It's the real way to cut emissions and make life more affordable for families.
So the Carney government has indeed cut $5 billion specifically earmarked for transit while not being transparent about it. This key message from the minister tries to get around that.
This would have been money to help get people out of their cars. This government is climate unfriendly.

If only the Canadian government invested as much time, effort, and money in a transit-"industry" policy.
Is there no argument for shifting from personal vehicle to mass transit (bus, train, tram/streetcar) manufacturing?

๐ These questions, and more (suggestions welcome), will be asked in the coming week.
Public transit is rarely on City Council's mind when any vehicle-related topic is discussed. Was the role of public transit raised in relation to street space and parking? Was there a thought to directing a portion parking fee revenues to transit services? #Charlottetown #PEI #transit #parking
Those transit agencies that have seen the fastest return of ridership and growth since 2023 are often those who have embraced more inclusive service design, and every agency should do this because itโs simply the right thing to do.
