Zigzag graphene nanoribbons with periodic porphyrin edge extensions Nature Chemistry - Graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges are key candidates for spintronic applications due to their tunable bandgaps and spin-polarized edge states. Now it has been shown that...

Really happy to see this out! We synthesize graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges and embedded porphyrins—creating a hybrid π–d electron system. While it may have some cool applications, I just can't get over how beautiful this molecule is. Look at the lateral strain Modulation!

A color photo of Helen Edwards writing something on a poster-sized piece of paper with "The Last Magnet Installed In the Energy Saver" written across the top in calligraphic letters. Edwards is wearing a denim shirt and a blue jean jacket. There are pens in her breast pocket. She is smiling and looking sown at the poster. Edwards has a halo of short, curly hair. Two mean stand in the background, one in a dark suit and red tie, the other in a brown work jacket.

Accelerator physicist Helen Edwards was born #OTD in 1936.

She was the lead scientist overseeing the design, construction, and operation of the Tevatron particle accelerator at Fermilab. Numerous discoveries have been made with the Tevatron, including the top quark in 1995. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

hey lovelies, I finally got around to publicly sharing my compilation of big tech energy and emissions data. I'll be using it in articles, posts etc but it's yours too, free to use (w/ attribution is nice)

Porphyrin-based organic materials have exciting optical properties and wide applications. In this study, the authors report a B(III) complex of a new sub-m-benziporphyrin with an unusual planar tridentate 14π-aromatic network.

Hello––Is A River Alive? is published in the US & Canada on 20 May.
I am coming on tour––dates & locations below––& would love to speak of the book’s ideas, people & rivers to as many folk as possible while I'm out there.
Please let anyone know who you think might want to come to an event.
Cheers!

anyway, I would need a lot more evidence to believe that 90% of college students in early 2023 were using ChatGPT for homework, and if we are going to berate the Youth for intellectual laziness, let's at least make sure we apply some amount of rigor to the data we're using to do it, please

The story of biochemist Muriel Bristol aka "a lady tasting tea"! Milk or tea first? Does it matter? Can you tell? The null hypothesis was designed with that question in mind. The story is in Steeped, too. Conversations around tea also led to De Hevesy's development of isotopic tracing (Nobel 1943)

Enhancing Reverse Intersystem Crossing with Extended Inverted Singlet–Triplet (X−INVEST) Systems Extended systems with an inverted singlet–triplet gap (X-INVEST) are designed by merging two INVEST cores in a Uthrene-like architecture. Such a gorgeous cover this month 😍

if I remember correctly (big if) the thing that replaced Sufjan Stevens music, was back-to-back No More Jockeys episodes.
So, thank you (and Key and Horne)!

To feel a better after listen to Casimir Pulaski Day, listen and watch this one:

You could say I was brave, but that was the only music I listened to. Many months later I was complaining about feeling low and one my colleagues said with a lot of conviction and some exasperation, "Don't listen to that music then!".

This is right up there with the saddest songs of them all. Absolutely gorgeous, also.

We tried listening to different people's playlists at my work place for fun. Mine was only Sufjan Stevens, and we never did that again. 🙈

Does the email address for correspondence provided in scientific papers not work? I usually just use that... Academic pages can be very bad and outdated. I have managed to get out print articles from people 😄

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (6?) with a Bluey backpack and an oversized pink baseball cap steps off a school bus and walks straight into her mum's outstretched arms. A big warm hug and an excited recounting of the day follows as they wander home.(1)

The editorial team sought additional input from Reviewers #2 and #3 after the second round of review to establish this
manuscript’s technical correctness. Their responses proved satisfactory enough to proceed to publication. The editorial team
wishes to point out that the results in this manuscript do not represent evidence for the presence of Majorana zero modes in
the reported devices. The work is published for introducing a device architecture that might enable fusion experiments using
future Majorana zero modes.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.
