Cars move people. They also keep people at home.

For every person a car moves, how many does it stop going out?

Who is counting the second group?

Petition: Reduce national speed limits on single carriageways Reduce the national speed limit on single carriageways usually found in rural areas from 60mph to 30mph.

Here's a govt petition to reduce the default limit on rural single carriageway roads from 60 down to 30. Seems a sensible suggestion to me. Obviously individual limits could be higher. They would just need to be signed.

Good to hear, it’s a good spot for a continuous footway.

Will the Gloucester Road junction get pedestrian crossings?

Is that Gloucester Rd? I knew it well growing up!

What are the plans for crossing?

The Reform UK leader of Derbyshire County Council, Alan Graves, has already backed the idea of charging visitors and has suggested the park authority should harness modern technology to implement a form of congestion charge.
"We could put some kind of cameras up - when you enter, you pay £1", he said.

Is this one thing where Labour don’t want to sound like Reform?

Wait times on pedestrian crossings of under 30 seconds reduced risky crossing considerably.

Do highway authorities generally have clear data on how long their pedestrian wait times are?

Sheffield driver who killed police worker in crash jailed Dean Tolan, 36, pleaded guilty to causing 29-year-old Ellie Smart's death by dangerous driving.

Wretched and terrible for everyone involved. Grief and guilt and prison.

And a seeming lack of even asking why this keeps happening?

Why is Sheffield covered with roads and vehicles which make such violent mistakes possible?

And when will we try to end this?

On this day 6 years ago all UK papers gave a coordinated message.

A reminder of how when a crisis really feels like a crisis, it makes sense to appeal not to self-interest but to us as part of a community.

The BBC undercover investigation into false immigration claims is deeply irresponsible journalism. It does not highlight that exploitation by unregulated advisors occurs because legal aid was cut and the system is insane to navigate.

I’m thinking more of how likely it is go the people who currently use buses to use a car instead, if the bus were not there. I expect plenty of people (perhaps a majority?) on buses don’t have a car option - so it may skew assumptions about what effect bus use has on reducing car use.

Scatterplot showing deprivation ranking from left to right (less deprived to the left and more deprived to the right), and percentage of households with no access to a car from top-to-bottom. The vertical access has labels ranging from 5% to 85% in 5 percentage point increments. There is a black vertical line through the centre of the plot indicating average deprivation and a horizontal line about a quarter of the way up the chart indicating the mean no-car access of 23%. There are 34000 red-brown dots forming the scatterplot show a positive correlation from bottom-left to top-right. The densest region of points is in the lower part of the plot, rising from left to right between around 10% to 50% non-car access. There is some spread of dots above the main line of correlation, especially towards the right of the plot.

If we examine each of the 34,000 'LSOAs' of England — local areas of c.800 households each — and compare deprivation with proportion of households with no access to a car, we see a clear pattern:

Areas with more deprivation tend to have more households with no car access. [3/8]

How many people who use buses also own cars?

Anyone know if there’s data on this? I’m struggling to find it.

I’m curious as it is so often stated as obvious that all bus users are displacing car use - eg a bus takes 70 cars off the road etc.

I also stopped wearing one a few years ago. It’s also one less bit of faff and warm hats fit better.

The thing that made me move was hearing a friend say they wished everyone cycling wore helmets as they felt more nervous driving around people without.

I want drivers to see that I am fragile.

It doesn’t need to be a conspiracy for a problem to be systemic.

The role of a decent prime minister would be to ensure that companies like this stop killing children.

Graphic titled “Isolation isn't safety” has on the left,a picture of a man who looks really upset sitting in an armchair and another man removing a mobility scooter, saying “we’re removing this for your own good”. Text above this drawing reads “No mobility aid, no accessible routes; no risk of injury while making trips, then below reads worse physical and mental health, worse ability to care for self and others, largely excluded from education/employment, family/friends and society, worse poverty, less able to get help as needed, then in big letters Less Safe.
On the right, a group of people are using a wheelchair tandem cycle, a powerchair with a clip-on pram, a power-converted wheelchair towing a suitcase, and a sit-to-stand wheelchair. Focusing on reducing one risk & ignoring the bigger picture can cause harm.

Too often Disabled people are discriminated against & hurt by people & organisations who think they're acting to keep us safe. We need to be allowed to judge the risks we take in the same way non-disabled people are.

Think I’ve seen these folk doing modelling for ads beside pot holes and life insurance forms.

One weird trick?

2 weeks ago 0 0 0 0

Something I found most striking in this case was the total lack of documented public support. It seemed to come from an economic and traffic model: computer says road.

And shows that authorities can do highway changes despite lots of opposition - not “bringing people with us”.

Trust the people!

A well-researched, vital, yet alarming piece by @samwake.bsky.social in @nowthengirl.bsky.social ⬇️

It's really worrying that @sheffcitycouncil.bsky.social are still looking to expand road capacity at Shalesmoor even though evidence suggests this will worsen air pollution at a nearby primary school.

A "moral and ethical" plan to widen Sheffield's ring road saw pollution go up. So why are we about to do it again? Despite promises from councillors and council officers, air pollution actually went up when the inner ring road was expanded in 2020.

I'm sure those who supported Sheffield's previous road expansions thought they would help. But the increases in air pollution should give us a clear warning. And when it induces more traffic, we can’t even rely on it to solve congestion.
