Zoe Daniel: renewables experts and advocates need to seize the moment.

Good analysis and comments from David Pocock who, along with some other MPs, has consistently argued for evidence-based policies that won't please the gambling industry, but will make a difference to the harms their products cause.

Today marks 1,000 days since the Murphy report into online gambling was delivered to government. The report contained 31 recommendations, including a ban on gambling ads and inducements and the creation of a national gambling regulator.

The Albanese Government has not yet responded to the report.

Me, musing aloud about what we (the people) can do in a crisis, while we wait to hear what we (the government of Aotearoa) might do.

Come for the practical examples; stay for the shameless e-bike boosterism/ classic Pulp earworm/ adorable art/ Long Covid solidarity/ Bill & Ted Easter egg, etc.

Winston Peters is tied down on a padded bed - for his own protection of course - as he performs an exorcist styled rant, "WOKE AGENDA! WOKE AGENDA! WOKE! AGENDA!!" He's bright green and spitting furiously.

Inside the bedroom stands a priest - he's holding a crucifix and a bible asking, "Winston! Is the 'WOKE AGENDA' in the room with us now?"

Earth being ‘pushed beyond its limits’ as energy imbalance reaches record high State of the Climate report finds Earth’s energy has moved dangerously out of balance, with oceans absorbing vast majority of trapped heat

Some climate change facts:

2015–2025 = hottest decade observed

🌊 ~90% of excess heat stored in the oceans

Heat gain ≈ 18× global energy use

Rate is accelerating, not stabilizing

This isn’t just warming; it’s a system moving further out of equilibrium

Iran oil crisis: why NZ’s car dependence is now a strategic liability New Zealand generates more than 85% of its electricity from renewable sources, but transport remains almost entirely chained to imported oil.

NZ's transport sector squashes the country's "clean, green" reputation - 99.5% of domestic transport energy comes from fossil fuels.

This nation's collective car brain is an utter disaster "... 815 light vehicles for every 1,000 people" and "road transport emissions have grown 82% since 1990."

How Public Health Lost The Narrative – And How It Can Win It Back - Health Policy Watch Even as storied public health entities are being dismantled, the tobacco industry – still responsible for eight million deaths each year – faces little

👉 Public health hasn’t lost the science — it’s losing the narrative.

A new analysis argues that evidence alone can’t compete in today’s attention economy. Communication must become core public health infrastructure.

The Covid Inquiry should have been an opportunity to see how we might respond to the next pandemic, or similar large scale emergency, better. For the greatest public good, not political point scoring, with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick, dirty and expensive. The govt is going to build a $1 billion liquid natural gas (LNG) import terminal, instead of investing in clean energy. And as for the levy…if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck…
