midlife by Claire Taylor

I wish I could go back
hold that girl in my arms
& tell her

sing your off-key songs

the world is deaf
to the pleasures of women

no one's listening anyway

41 today. Woohoo.

If you’d like to help me celebrate, consider getting a copy of my book, or if you’ve read it and liked it, recommend it to a friend, or request a copy through your library. Or just go out and be kind today and try to enjoy your Monday.

Victor Wong lived such an incredible life. He collaborated with and inspired the Beat writers and invented the on-air photojournalistic essay.

If I were you I’d get an unlisted number,
then think about growing up, just a little.
I can’t tell you which divining bones to choose, that’s your job,
and when you come close, I wish it was all around,

around over me. The jingle of your hat comforts me,
confirms me in my worst aspects. I shall never be anything but a clown,
now. And there’s so much work to do,
so many puzzles to ignore.

Poem - 'An introduction to poetry' by Billy Collins

Poem - 'An introduction to poetry' by Billy Collins

My high school experience was very much the last 2 stanzas of this Ars Poetica

There's a place for the dissection of a poem to understand craft, particularly as a poet

But before you want to write you need to love poems, to water ski across their surface

*drop of poison on top of the cherry:

The demonic toddler stills feels the bizarre need to one-up the cancer delivery grandma…..?

The “aging person needs to deliver McDonalds to keep her aging partner from dying” as a casual norm is so pitifully American.

The cherry on top is that it’s repeated by demonic toddler who helped rob the aging husband of access to care in the first place.

Wide shot in black and white of the back of a man sitting on a park bench, gazing out at the day. The park is overgrown and teeming.

Flour comes from a plant, sugar comes from a plant, and chocolate comes from a plant.

So, basically a chocolate chip cookie is a salad.

This and “Poor, Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid.

On the remote chance I become a billionaire, it will be that and an adaptation of segments of Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ directed by Terry Gilliam, Tarsem Singh, Tim Burton, Julie Taymor, Wes Anderson, Jordan Peele, etc.

Mixed media illustration of a green-skinned purple-haired witch waving a magic wand above a pot of daffodils who have eyes. There are other plants with eyes and mouths in the background as well and noted everywhere. A little girl is entering the greenhouse looking shocked.

Illustration of a two anthromorphic zebras in a sculpture studio. One of them has no stripes and is sculpting a bust of the other zebra who is sitting in a stool with her eyes closed.

Illustration of a little girl and her dad in the kitchen. The dad is stirring a meal in a pot on the stove. There are aroma lines coming out of the pot and the girl has closed her eyes and is taking in the smell. There is a black cat peeking above the counter top and looking at the pot.

Hi #portfolioday 👋

My name is Denis and I'm a #kidlit illustrator who loves bold line work, wonky shapes, limited palettes and painterly textures. I'd love to work on more board books, picture books, early readers and middle grade. 🙌
