Why does this matter? Electroactive microbes like D. acetexigens turn waste into electricity. Uconvering a new mechanism expands the toolkit for energy-efficient wastewater treatment, bioremediation, and low-carbon nanomaterial & bioelectronics synthesis.
We also found similar genetic blueprints across Desulfobacterota from diverse environments, suggesting this ability is more common in nature than previously recognized.
