This is also a problem that the showrunners or producers (can't remember) had with the character Vic Mackey in The Shield

Wow - for the first time in decades there’s no North Face store in Palo Alto

I’ve noticed Mandarin is much more commonly heard now in HK. It wasn’t always like that. Cantonese doesn’t have that specific problematic homophone.

Heh HK is not known for customer service. It’s on par with Chinatown customer service. But maybe I just have it worse because I don’t speak/read Chinese - workers in authentic places are exasperated with me. If you go to the Mong Kok area, use the Langham mall for restrooms/AC, food court if needed.

Yeah like near handrail height right? And not reference on any maps.

There’s some Manhattan subway stations I’ve been to 1000 times and I can never remember which exit is which. Times Square. Rockefeller Center. Just numbering the exits would be a huge improvement.

I would do it one way - but I’m not a good source as I’ve done it a lot of times. Also once I had to take a taxi to go to the next destination in time.

The lines for the funicular to the Peak can get pretty long so try to do that early in the day.

Also if you take the ferry I would suggest paying the extra dime to be on the top level.

The U.S.S. John P. Murtha was one of the ships at San Francisco’s Fleet Week back in 2023. A whole bunch of people in our area probably have been on it like I was

Every time I take Caltrain to SFO I inevitably just ask someone. It’s not a confidence building experience.

In college I took a sociology course on the History of Food... and the 80 year old Jewish prof had great fun in asking me if I had eaten XYZ Chinese dish before - because my answers were always "No" or "Gross" (stinky tofu) - and then proceed to tell me how I was missing out.

Sorry, I meant to say $268 (I assumed it would be 88!)

I think it is served multiple ways since I saw them carve it table side. But I'm far from the expert on this as my knowledge of Chinese food leans more towards Panda Express.

I guess I'll just pile on by saying that one of Newark's big problems - even in the new Terminal A! - is that the bathroom quantity is woefully insufficient for the number of pax. I get that they're cost centers, but come on.

This is one thing @flysfo.bsky.social gets very right.

People on my local forum were mad that the IHOP near me went out business. People liked it because parking was easy and there was never a line. 🤔

Now it’s a high end Chinese restaurant that sells $288 Peking duck, and the lots is always full. Sometimes even on weeknights!

I’ve head that the 1080p 16:9 version of the early seasons distort some of the blocking. Did you find this to be true?

There’s a whole list of airports in this program. I think SFO is the largest one.

A post from Feb 2002 decrying how the security checkpoint at JFK had a tip jar

A post from Feb 2002 decrying how the security checkpoint at JFK had a tip jar

My 1st favorite bit of airport trivia?

Before TSA, airports used to use worse-than-mall cop level contractors for security checkpoints

This post isn’t me, but I personally witnessed this setup at old JFK T8 in Nov 2001:

Time for my 2nd favorite bit of airport trivia: @flysfo.bsky.social doesn’t use TSA

They have a private contractor that kind of looks like TSA. Most people don’t even notice there’s a difference.

In my 2nd year out of college, I launched a product at MacWorld Expo that accidentally deleted all the calendar events from your Palm device if there wasn't sufficient memory.

People came to our booth to complain about it. That was a real formative moment for me.

Because my Caltrain ride is ~17 minutes long, I've gone days without being checked... but I've also somehow been checked twice on the same ride!

(Caltrain only lets people board the train at its SF terminus after being checked.)

Doesn’t this defeat the point of tipping? Or are we heading in a direction like in Hong Kong where you have to pre-tip in the app to actually get your ride accepted?

My hotel room looks into the back of other buildings. From my “career” in the Garment District, I can see that the brightly lit ones are different phases of garment manufacturing.
