Telling a senior teacher your mental and physical health is slipping because of the job, and they brush it off as "new teacher things" is an indescribable experience. 🤪

As much as I love Illustrative Math, I wish we had more training on how to differentiate the activities and making them engaging. Yes, Ss are playing with manipulative and thinking more, but it's boring when they aren't using manipulative. The Kiddom books feel like glorified worksheets at times.
Hey #iteachmath! When a parent makes a comment that "not everyone is good at math" to you address that statement? If so, how? TIA
Teacher shortage is exacerbated by the inequities of student teaching, and we really need to start addressing it.
plan lessons and complete certification requirements. I always end up spending the weekend disassociating and "catching up sleep."
This is so real. Uni teaching programs and school districts also love to drill equity, but they fail to address how inequitable student teaching is. I'm down to my last 18 dollars, waking up at 5:30 to work, and by the time I finish house chores and classes, it's 9pm. I'm supposed to make time to
The students know what we're doing. They can read the room. Teaching to the test, in math, seems like the fastest way to get students to hate math *and* learning.
A student expressed to me that they have been distancing from math because previous classes only taught them tricks and shortcuts... just so they could pass state standardized exams. Do math teachers feel like they are doing the students a favor by teaching this way??
🤔 Challenge for #iteachmath teachers this week. 🤔
Make sure when you choose your "fun activities" for the week, that they are ALL related to math. There are plenty of things out there. Maybe we can share some of our mathy games and activities for this week.

1. A teacher in Ohio who has worked at the same public school for 34 years was suspended without pay and threatened with termination for offering four books in her classroom library that contained LGBTQ characters.
She's fighting back.
I’m sorry but 262 words is not a manifesto. It’s a statement. Maybe a communique. Not a manifesto.

I always tell folks that teaching someone math is like telling them how to get from NYC to Chicago. Some kids take the shortest and fastest route and some kids take all the back roads. The kids who take the “back roads” make connections and see things others won’t.
as a trans woman, i would find this difficult to articulate except in that in a patriarchal binarized gendered society womanhood develops essentially as an outplacement from manhood, whose polar identity develops as a secondary characteristic; in this sense it contains all exclusions.
Units, which the students must also pay attention to.
I would hope a student make this misconception, or I would introduce it myself. Then, ask the students to discuss about it, like does 25 + 24 makes sense when you (the students) convert it back to the pictorial representation or what does the 2 represent. Contextualizing this also introduces...
An image shows the expression 2 times ( 5 + 4) above a pictorial representation with a light saber and a gun next to a parenthesis grouping, within which there are 5 stick figures with triangular heads and 4 stick figures with circular heads with plus signs in between them.
I think the misconception here is thinking each toy piece represents a variable. The "2" represents a group of weapons (say, saber and gun). The distributing action and its result answer how many groups you would need to distribute it across 5 troops of one group and 4 troops of another group.
