A very strange forest-associated shorebird known as the American Woodcock. It is round with an egg-shaped head and a long beak, almost as long as it is tall, which is uses to dig worms out of the soil and leaf litter. Its eye is dark brown and set in a weird spot on its head, so it can see behind it and above it better than on front of it. It is mostly beige but covered in beautiful rich browns and grays in a chaotic pattern that helps it blend in with the leaf litter. It is blending in well in the leaf litter, but in front of some daffodil leaves that help it stand out against the backdrop.

Aaaaaaand this is why I carry my high-zoom birding camera everywhere I go in the spring.

So when the Ornithology Club students find an American Woodcock in a green space on campus, I can run from my house and get the best woodcock photos I've ever taken.

A view of my art desk, upon which you can see various items in the background including a question block with 1-up mushroom, a rainbow caterpillar and a gold apple. The camera is focused on the end of an idle camera arm, where hanging are a few sets of butterfly wing earrings, with a matching glass bead hanging above the wing and below the earring wire.

Work in progress. I finished the wings almost a year ago, but life got in the way and I never finished.

I saw the #MonochromeMarch hashtag and thought it would be fun to do a painting! This painting is of a banded alder borer and was done in gouache on 12"x9" mixed media paper only using the color black. It was a very fun painting to do!
