Well, I don’t think I’m going to need to worry about anymore mice in my garage, but you’re going to need to stay there until I get back from work… while not a rattlesnake, this black racer was angrily shaking it’s tail at me as a warning before it started striking at me

Writing about “notorious drug lord & narcoterrorist Pablo Escobar’s private collection of cocaine hippos” in a manuscript was not something I thought I would happen, but here we are… 💊 🦛 🔫 get ready for an out-of-the-box special issue on invasive species I am organizing for @sicbjournals.bsky.social
There’s still time to take our survey about the landscape of science communication and share your experience

I’m just getting back from vacation but I’ll share this around!
A block of text that says "Scientists at the University of Miami are carrying out a research study on trends in the field of science communication. For this survey we are defining science communication as work that is done: • by a technical subject area expert in some field related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, • outside of classroom settings • aimed at the public If you are 18 years of age or older and work or recently worked in this field (full-time, part-time, or as a side project), please click the link below to complete a short survey. If you are interested in learning more about this research study, please e-mail us at Julia.wester@miami.edu. In the body of your email please provide your full name, and if you would prefer to be contacted by phone, your phone number and the best time to reach you. Contacting us for more information does not commit you to participating, and should you decide to participate you may terminate your participation at any time."
Attention Science Communicators!
We are conducting a survey on the landscape of science communication & need your help gathering experiences.
Please send this to #SciComm ppl you know. We want to get as thorough a sense of the state of the field as we can.

Well, a cold front can in while we were in Georgia that made the fishing not ideal… but at least I squeaked out a few different fish, making Georgia the 35th US state or territory I’ve got a fish in! 🐟🎣🐠

Psh, fish can use tools, too… but this is some quite complex tool use and problem solving by animals!
Sometimes you stumble on some #sharkscience that makes you think you don't really know anything about them at all. Yesterday i found this paper: "Observations of the bowmouth guitarfish by-catches by the tropical tuna purse seine fleet in the Indian Ocean’s open waters"

The American Dipper is NA’s only aquatic songbird, and happens to be in my top 2 birds🐦! Here’s one I happened to see at Multnomah Falls just outside a Portland for #SICB2026 doing its namesake “dipping” behavior! They will all walk around underwater looking for 🐛 and lil 🐟 to eat
So long Portland, it was a great #SICB2026, full of great science, great food (and fun commiseration when the food wasn’t so great), new and old friends, waterfalls, great science, an most importantly, great scientific community! See y’all in Pittsburgh for #SICB2027!
I’m glad you have a strategy 😂
They are really cool! But be careful, there was a diver that befriended a moray & hand fed it Vienna sausages from a bag regularly. One day, he struggled to open the bag quickly enough a the eel mistook his thumb for a sausage and bit it… then the pharyngeal jaw bit… pop! Now he can only count to 9
I thought I had one with an oarfish from them, but it’s just giant squid, morays, Loch Ness monster, narwhal with a lightsaber, anglerfish, and a few others, including a different elongate fish (mostly cutoff in this image) that could loosely be interpreted as an oarfish. But I have matching shorts!
I ended up getting that coelacanth one and a garden eel one! I like the colors and patterns but not the best quality material compared to some other ones. I’ve been liking RSVLTs for their quality and they now have a wild assortment of animal shirts. I may wear my monotreme & marsupial one tomorrow!
My lab is seeking a #postdoc for a 3-year project on Pilbara leaf-nosed #bat 🦇 conservation, addressing climate change vulnerability using physiological, ecological, & modelling approaches.

Sketches cyborg roach and cosplay for science druid emporium
I've only been to 30min worth of #SICB2026 talks and I've already learned about cyborg roaches and druids making native seed balls. LFG
I’m excited to be the first ever Artist-in-Residence at #SICB2026! Stop by the @sicbjournals.bsky.social booth during the poster session to chat with me about scientific art and take home some swag with my artwork on it! 🐡
#SICB2026 is almost starting!
If there, be sure to stop by the expo areas at coffee breaks to get must have items like these light catchers made from

@jmacrander.bsky.social is hosting the booth!
Thanks! I’m doing what I can
I don’t think so, but we will be publishing the results of our study with @sicbjournals.bsky.social shortly after the presentation
Come learn about effective ND strategies for success in academia (so you don't have to start from scratch)! Relatedly, I will be sharing my experiences as a panelist at the Symposium's Welcome, Community Building, & Networking Workshop on Jan. 4th at 12:15 in Room Oregon 202, see you there! (2/2)
I'll be presenting on a very different topic than usual for #SICB2026... "Strengths, challenges, & experiences of neurodivergent faculty in academia" at 8:45am on Jan. 7th in Room A105 as part of Symposium 12: Disabled & Neurodivergent perception, community, & identity in the biosciences (1/2)
Having done a similar postdoc in the Fudge Lab on hagfish slime, I highly recommend this opportunity!
