Token anxiety got the better of me and I converted my Seaside Drive demake to Picotron. Having to render to a 384x216 screenbuffer to support ripped UFO50 sprites (they look too small at 480x270 and don't look well scaled).

Starting to flesh out waves. The funny thing about this demake is that it's taken me until now to realise that Seaside Drive is just a single screen locked yaxis Shmup. The horiztonal scrolling of the background tricks your brain into thinking it is something different.

Working on a spatial partioning test for my Sunset Drive demake. Strangely cathartic and more importantly, quite performant with 200 entities + bullets at 60fps.

Moving along nicely. Sunset Drive is one of my favourite ufo50 games. One of the few games in the collection that is deceptively easy - once you realise that waggling left/right is the way to keep charge at 100%.

Trying to learn batching graphics with userdata in #picotron. Massive performance difference compared to a more traditional AoS approach. I can shift 2000 sprites with < %50 CPU.

Very nice. If you're going to expand on this you might want to think about risk/reward which is really the main mechanic of avoid-em-ups. i.e. there should be more reward for collecting a power pill close to a floating brick. Don't Die Mr Robot is a great example of this type of game.

Increased the verbs for Bounder. Bounder can now dash, is forced to roll over some surfaces and can be launched like a rocket. Now I need to fix my collisions again...

You can always choose a lower res vid mode to maintain that pico8 feel. Vid 4 will give you 160x90

Game feel suggestion - position rings high in the air and underwater. Then have waves that can send you high and allow player to tilt jet ski to send it underwater. This is why wave race is still the GOAT today

More Bounder progress: slightly improved tileset, added collisions with "high" tiles and other entities. Player now respawns after death. Recreated the first level from the original (with one extra jump tile for testing because I still can't play this game).

More progress on Bounder, moved to Pictotron for an easier time of things. Added patrolling enemies. Movement doesn't feel quite right yet. Need to build some levels, new enemy types, and make it look about 100x less ugly.
