On April 11, the 30-year Treasury yield crossed 5%.
Briefly.
But that was enough to unsettle the White House, spook global markets, and remind everyone that bond yields are not just numbers.
They’re boundaries.

A screenshot from BBC news, copy says The assumptions about Trump's tactics are now up for question published at 10:32 Faisal Islam Economics editor These stock market falls are pretty shocking to see. As a reminder, a stock market is the best guess of what every company in the world is worth and what their future profits will be. What we’re seeing in the last few hours is the idea that the rules underpinning everything we know about the economy are changing - and those companies around the world are going to make less profit because of Trump’s tariffs. There were two specific assumptions: That Trump would react to the markets, and that he’d adjust his policy accordingly That he was using these tariffs as a form of negotiation - so you start high, and negotiate down As a result of Trump’s comments over the weekend, and those he made on Air Force One last night, both those assumptions are now up for question. And the markets are reacting in a really quite violent way.
How did anyone in the markets actually believe the two assumptions listed here? It mystifies me that people keep rationalising the actions of someone who clearly has no rationality.
This is all looking very Liz Truss.

We are in the woodland today and apparently surrounded by chiffchaffs!
Asian women: 94 cents White women: 80 cents Black women: 66 cents Native and Latina women: 58 cents
Yesterday was #EqualPayDay and for every $1 white men make:
Asian women: 94 cents
White women: 80 cents
Black women: 66 cents
Native and Latina women: 58 cents
Women get paid less, but across racial lines the pay is even LOWER. This is #TheDoubleTax.

Oh neat, March 28 is national "Smash Your Amazon Echo Devices With A Hammer" day.
I’m reading it and I thought I was already cynical enough about Meta to not be shocked by the book, but boy was I wrong.
Careless People is *juicy*, y’all
Here’s a cheat sheet with all the phone numbers for the US Senate. I have a feeling we’ll be calling them a lot in the near future.
Finally some good news.
screenshot of a YouTube video embedded in an AJ Bell customer survey; the video has played once and is suggesting other things to watch. The first is a video with a crowd carrying a banner saying ISLAM WILL SUBJUGATE YOU and a chyron reading PREPARE FOR THE WORST AFTER 3 MONTHS. The next video is a blonde white woman and the words DEPP FOCUS; the third is a white man in a black T shirt and black cap, and the words AFTER EVERY UPLOAD
I bet AJ Bell *loves* having this kind of islamophobic video show up in the middle of their customer survey because the YouTube recommendation algorithm is going toxic again
Prem might be the most important journalist in America right now, the only person covering this story with the urgency it needs. Absurd that there isn't wall to wall coverage of this.
A good part of my job is to read extremely concerning studies in order to compose cross-sectional view of What's At Stake and work out ways to engage stakeholders
This is, without hyperbole, the most concerning thing I have read in a long time www.scientificamerican.com/article/micr...

A cloth shopping bag full of 100+ daffodil bulbs. The bulbs are already sprouting and need planted ASAP!
A sprouted daffodil bulb planted in a forest floor, surrounded by a prickly-looking moss, twigs and leaves. The moss and ground look shiny, moist and lush.
Today’s stress-relief job: plant 100+ daffodil bulbs in our woodland!

I just looked on the wayback machine and it wasn’t there last summer but it is there in Oct 2024
Book cover of what money can’t buy, the moral limit of markets. It’s a plain blue cover with a white cloud. A penguin book.
Current read on “the moral limits of markets” - this is good.
A sheet of red squares painted in acrylic paint with various combinations of yellow and blue layered on top in a sequential order, each one neatly labelled with a pencil, for example RB, RBY, RBYB, RBYY.
I saw a Rednote video about “visual mixing” of paint, also called glazing, and have been using GenAI as a teacher to learn the technique. Such a simple but mind-blowing idea to use thin layers so that the light bounces through each layer and your eye does the mixing!

This is 100% one of the critical things that I think got us here! I think about this all the time.
When Musk took over Twitter and started openly ignoring employment law, tech companies didn’t push back, they used it as an excuse to lower their standards too.
Now, Musk is using the exact same playbook to try and dismantle the entire US civil service.
Stand up to assholes, early and often.
