Emma Best AM Chairman of the London Assembly Health Committee “Measles is one of the most infectious diseases we know, yet it is preventable with a safe and highly effective vaccine. What we are seeing in London should set alarm bells ringing as vaccination rates are amongst the lowest in the country, and as a result, preventable outbreaks are becoming inevitable rather than exceptional." "We heard clearly from health leaders that this situation is not unexpected. When coverage drops, diseases like measles, and increasingly others such as meningitis, exploit those gaps quickly, particularly in dense urban areas and communities facing deprivation." "While the response on the ground has been strong, we cannot keep relying on emergency catch-up campaigns. We need sustained, targeted action to rebuild routine vaccination coverage, improve access in communities, and ensure no child falls through the cracks. Without that shift, London will remain exposed to repeated outbreaks that put chil
#AssemblyHealth has warned, in a recent letter, that London is facing a growing risk of preventable disease outbreaks, after a surge in measles cases linked to low vaccination uptake. Read the letter in full:

Zoë Garbett AM Chair of the London Assembly Housing Committee “Too many Londoners are trapped in a system that is confusing, inconsistent, and at times deeply unfair. While the shortage of social housing is the biggest challenge, the system itself often makes Londoners’ experience of the housing crisis even worse and homelessness even harder to solve. “We heard from Londoners facing years of uncertainty, poor communication, and decisions that simply don’t make sense. When people cannot access housing because the process is too complex or the rules are too harsh, the system is not working as it should and fails those who need it most. While we urgently need more social housing, there is also clear scope to make the system we have more transparent, consistent, and humane.”
After investigating the practice of social housing allocations in London boroughs, #AssemblyHousing has published the report: 'Barriers at every turn: Social housing allocation in London’. Read it in full: www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...
Emma Best AM Chairman of the London Assembly Health Committee “Frontline NHS staff are doing extraordinary work in challenging circumstances, yet too many are being subjected to unacceptable levels of violence and abuse.” “We heard strong evidence that inconsistent police responses, gaps in training and resources for NHS security teams, and unresolved issues with the rollout of the ‘Right Care, Right Person’ strategy/initiative are placing additional pressure on healthcare workers and allowing dangerous situations to escalate. “No one should face threats, intimidation or assault simply for doing their job. We need a coordinated approach across Government, the Met and the NHS to ensure staff are safe, reporting is easy and meaningful, and offenders face real consequences. Without this, we risk a growing culture of fear that harms staff wellbeing and undermines patient care.”
Today, #AssemblyHealth has published two letter calling for action to tackle rising violence against healthcare workers in the capital: www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...
Hina Bokhari OBE AM Chair of the London Assembly Economy, Culture and Skills Committee “Anyone could become a carer, if a relative becomes unwell or disabled, and often it is unexpected and challenging. Carers are unsung heroes, who put their loved ones first, many giving up their careers and independence. “We need to see more financial support for our unpaid carers, and through our investigation, speaking directly to unpaid carers and experts, providing reduced transport costs could have a significantly positive impact. “The Mayor and government must seriously consider our recommendations, and give our unpaid carers the support they need. It’s time we start caring for our carers.”
Over a third (34%) of unpaid carers aged 25-44 are currently living in poverty. #AssemblyEconomy is calling for TfL to offer reduced transport costs for London’s unpaid carers in its report - London’s unpaid carers - in full: www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...

Marina Ahmad AM Chair of the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee “Millions of people use London’s transport network every day, and what should be a straightforward journey, can turn into a traumatic experience for so many. “Many Londoners, in particular women and girls, disabled people, members of faith communities, and LGBTQ+ Londoners, face unacceptable levels of hate crime and harassment on the network. “We heard throughout our investigation that many crimes like this will go unreported, for various reasons, including a lack of trust in any outcome, the trauma of the incident taking place, and slow response times. “Our transport network must be safe and accessible for everyone, yet some groups face the fear of being abused and harassed, and it is unacceptable to see this level of abuse.”
This morning, #AssemblyPolice has published its report into violence against women and girls and hate crime on public transport, with recommendations for the Met, TfL, BTP and the Mayor. Read it in full: www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...
Elly Baker AM Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee “Shockingly, the 10,500 reported incidents of assaults on transport workers in 2023/24 may just be the tip of the iceberg. Even more deeply concerning - the Transport Committee heard evidence of a culture which normalises assaults on transport workers and blames victims when incidents occur. “The brave workers who told us their personal stories often had not reported an assault to their employer, most commonly because such incidents were seen as just “part of the job” followed by a belief that the complaint would not be taken seriously.” [...] “Addressing these issues is a vital next step in providing a safe and supportive workplace for London’s transport workers.”
#AssemblyTransport has published two letters, to the TfL Commissioner and the Home Secretary, regarding assaults on transport workers in London: www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...

Leonie Cooper AM Chair of the London Assembly Environment Committee “While decarbonised heat networks potentially improve energy security through the use of waste heat and renewable energy, most are currently still hugely affected by price shocks while electricity prices are still linked to gas. “The ongoing conflict in the Middle East risks rising costs for gas and oil. Even prior to recent price rises, gas prices for customers in the United Kingdom were expected to be 50 per cent higher in March 2026 than in the winter of 2021-22. “It is only fair that Londoners on heat networks are given the equivalent support with their heating bills that other domestic gas and electricity consumers receive, which is why we are calling on the Government to urgently introduce price protections for heat networks.“
#AssemblyEnvironment has written to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, about the urgent need for heat network price protections in London. www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...
