Even more deeply concerning - the Transport Committee heard evidence of a culture which normalises assaults on transport workers and blames victims when incidents occur. “The brave workers who told us their personal stories often had not reported an assault to their employer, most commonly because such incidents were seen as just “part of the job” followed by a belief that the complaint would not be taken seriously.” [...] “Addressing these issues is a vital next step in providing a safe and supportive workplace for London’s transport workers.”

Elly Baker AM Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee “Disabled Londoners, older Londoners, young Londoners, low-income Londoners, parents with young children and women; all these groups could currently face barriers to using London’s transport network. “TfL collects a significant amount of data on its passengers, but this is lacking depth and nuance around issues concerning accessibility and inclusion and those people who are not using its services. “Our investigation also examined TfL’s engagement with key stakeholders to understand their varied travel needs, and while the Committee welcomes TfL’s engagement with its advisory groups, we feel this is limited and TfL could do more to engage with more diverse voices. “Inclusion is not only about fairness – it’s also about functionality and the future resilience of our city.”

There is currently a patchwork approach to car clubs in London and they are failing to reach their full potential. We heard from TfL that it is working to update its six commitments on car clubs, and this work will continue in the new year. Yet, if Zipcar goes ahead with its proposal, 90 per cent of London’s car club market will have disappeared by then. “TfL must take action now to ensure that car club provision in London does not disappear entirely.”

But TfL does possess a range of tools needed to help make walking and wheeling a pleasant, safer and more accessible experience for everyone across the whole network, which are currently being overlooked and underutilised. “The number of daily walking trips taken in London has not increased in the last seven years. Unless TfL takes action now to make walking and wheeling a better experience for everyone, we fear these figures won’t increase; and we won’t realise the benefits of being the world’s most walkable city. “It is time for TfL to be bolder and push further with the tools it has to de-clutter and repair London’s streets, alongside prioritising inclusive street designs.”
