Cones and consequences: the false dichotomy of conifers vs broad‐leaves has critical implications for research and modelling In plant science research and modelling, particularly from the northern hemisphere, the terms ‘needle-leaved’ and ‘conifer’ along with ‘broad-leaved’ and ‘angiosperm’ are often used synonymously, cre...

Did you ever wonder when to use "conifer", "gymnosperm", "needleleaf", "angiosperms" and "broadleaves"? Us too so we transformed the discussion into this viewpoint. I hope you enjoy the reading as much as we enjoyed the writing! @kateplantphys.bsky.social nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Many wealthy members of Congress are descendants of rich slaveholders − new study demonstrates the enduring legacy of slavery Researchers measured lawmakers’ wealth and found that those whose Southern ancestors owned slaves before abolition have a higher net worth today.

"Legislators whose ancestors were large slaveholders – defined in our study as owning 16 or more slaves– have a current median net worth five times larger than their peers whose ancestors were not slaveholders: $5.6 million vs. $1.1 million."

🍄 preprint’s out! 🍄 New reference genome for the Cèpe de Bordeaux with telomere-to-telomere level across multiple chromosomes.
We hope that it will be a great resource to study the genomics and evolution of ectomycorrhizal fungi 🧬

Why Fungi Could Get Higher Conservation Status And Why It Matters The UK and Chile are proposing at the UN’s biodiversity conference COP16 in Colombia that fungi receive the same status to animals and plants. This could help foster and funding research.

Our first Bluesky post contains some good news for #fungi! After a long history of being unprotected, COP16 marked a huge advancement in the conservation of fungi. 🍄🥳

Thanks to work led by our partners at Fungi Foundation, The Fungal Conservation Pledge was introduced at #COP16. bit.ly/3Vl9GHL

Science takes time - a lot of time. Time that is more and more difficult to make available because of increased workloads. Time that exceeds the temporary contracts of postdocs and PhDs.

I'll illustrate this using our paper published in Nature yesterday. 🧵 (1/x)
