Here it is! Nearly 9,000 words on the history of SaGa’s initial reception abroad, the cultural context surrounding Unlimited SaGa, how Unlimited upends normative game design, and a brief rumination on the game's possible future: ogrerun.com/2026/02/24/u...
QTP with a game you would love to replay this year.
Great interview! The Citizen Sleeper duology is the best experience I've had playing a science fiction series since the Mass Effect trilogy.
I especially love the contrast between the cold simulation system and the humanist writing in Citizen Sleeper.
do you also like Matsuno's other games? Things like Crimson Shroud, Ogre Battle, and Tactics Ogre?
I really enjoyed this game, especially the narrative tricks, the historical setting, and Gen Kobayashi's character design.
I feel the game was underrated, but it seems popular enough to warrant a sequel.
I definitely need this one to put next to my Tactics Ogre art book.
Of course, there are other notable TRPGs from the 16-bit era, such as Front Mission and Shining Force, and very important later tactical RPGs, such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Brigandine, Disgaea, Valkyria Chronicles, Jeanne d'Arc, The Banner Saga, and Triangle Strategy.
30 years later, it seems the masterpieces of Yasumi Matsuno (Tactics Ogre) and Shouzou Kaga (Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) on the Super Famicom remain the cornerstones of the tactical RPG genre.
It's one of my favorite games! I'm a big fan of Matsuno's games in general, especially his tactical games, but also FF XII, Vagrant Story, Crimson Shroud, and even his contributions to FF XIV.
I played War of the Lions on my iPad. It works, although it lacks quality-of-life elements like speed mode.
On a mobile screen, FFT really does look a bit small, even though the FFT environments are small compared to other TRPGs; I think that's because of the 3D environment with an isometric view.
Each version of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre changes significantly, even when remastered, not remade.
The good thing is that the next time I want to revisit the game, I can pick a different version.
I love the cinematic direction of Final Fantasy Tactics using in-game character graphics. This design choice was made even better with voice acting.
It's rare to see something similar nowadays. Tactics Ogre Reborn does something similar, although with less visual detail.
yeah, especially Bambi

I think the debate continues because there are still clear differences in audiovisual production and screenwriting.
Although studios do draw inspiration from each other: Pixar films are inspired by Ghibli works; on the other hand, Disney animations and science fiction have inspired many anime.
Paranormasight was my favorite Square Enix game of 2023, even though it was a year with many easily recommendable JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy XVI, Octopath Traveller II, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.
This sequel definitely deserves more attention.
The best platform for card games and Dragon Quest IV-VI.
