I think I found this lady's favorite spot. She is always hanging out on the nesting box.

Splash of Color in the Snow

"This image captures a striking blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) perched on a snow-dusted branch, its brilliant blue plumage standing out in sharp contrast to the icy surroundings. The bird's crest is raised slightly, giving it an alert and regal posture. Its black markings and soft white underbelly blend harmoniously with the winter landscape, while delicate flakes cling to the rough bark of the branch. The blurred background suggests a snowy forest, muted tones of grays and whites adding to the serene atmosphere. The blue jay’s sharp gaze and poised stance convey a quiet resilience amid the cold, embodying the beauty and endurance of nature in winter." - Copilot

Black-billed Cuckoo, by Chris Sloan

Black-billed Cuckoo, by Chris Sloan

Did you see any birds this weekend?

Black-billed Cuckoos are among the last long-distance migrants to arrive in their breeding territories, so many are still migrating into early June in the northern U.S. and southern Canada.

White steam rises off of the electric blue center of Grand Prismatic Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Tan and rusty Orange ground rim the outer edge of the springs. People can be seen walking along a boardwalk to view the springs. Green pine trees line the foreground and the mountains in the background.

The colors of Grand Prismatic Hot Springs are attributed to microorganisms called thermophiles, meaning heat lover. In massive groups, they appear as colors, which vary depending on the temperature of the water they inhabit.

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, by Chris Sloan

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, by Chris Sloan

Any birding plans for this weekend?

Another late migrant is the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, one of the last flycatchers to move through eastern North America. Peak migration for this uncommon Empidonax is late May into June. It breeds in boreal bogs and forests and takes its time getting there!

A river flows over a 317 foot cliff creating a spectacular waterfall with lots of mist which that generates a beautiful rainbow. Tiny specks which are people visible next to the brink. Pine trees line both sides of the waterfall.

Vernal Fall + 🌈

The hike from Happy Isles trailhead to the brink of this waterfall is my #1 🫶 it sets the stage for everything beyond! But is also just a great hike standalone.

Reminder, if you can’t keep your hummingbird feeder clean, just put it away. Fungus forming in the sugar water can be lethal to hummingbirds. Plant flowers instead. Even a pot of red salvia is popular.

"The image features a common grackle standing on a forest floor covered in dry pine needles, leaves, and patches of green moss. The bird’s head gleams with an iridescent blue sheen, contrasting with its darker body feathers. The focus is slightly soft, adding a mysterious, almost dreamlike quality to the scene. The signature "Swede's Photographs" appears in the bottom left corner, marking the image’s origin." - Copilot

Sentinel of the Skies

"The image features a great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus)** perched at the highest point of a weathered, dead tree. Its body is sleek and upright, with warm brown and gray plumage contrasting against a delicate wash of yellow along its belly. The bird’s head holds a slight crest, giving it an alert and watchful expression. Its sharp beak points forward, as if surveying the landscape below. The aged tree, stripped of its foliage, stands as a solitary sentinel against the sky, its rough, cracked bark adding to the sense of time passed. The open space around the bird emphasizes its isolation yet also its command over the perch—it is the master of this vantage point." - Copilot
