Thanks to the Criterion sale, my wife and I just enjoyed a random double feature of "The Princess Bride" and "Altered States." Just when I thought these movies couldn't possibly have anything in common (save their decade), I am proven wrong.
Okay, and maybe both are fairy tales, but that's it!

One I distinctly remember was a book by Sam Shepard. On the cover, he looks like he's annoyed and has his thumb out like he's hitchhiking. Title: "Boy Oh Boy, I Get To Sleep With Jessica Lange." And who can forget the driver of the Letterman Bookmobile, Gruff But Lovable Gus!

Easter Movies Actually: Rise Of the Guardians (2012) "Rise of the Guardians" is like a superhero movie, but with mythical characters we all know and love: Santa Claus (okay, he's not mythical, but real), the tooth fairy, Jack Frost, the Sandman and, of ...

ICYMI, our new episode dropped a few days early. You're welcome! Since it's an Easter episode, it only made sense, especially if you're in the market for an egg dye volcano. Anyway, "ROTG" is a Christmas movie and an Easter movie. Also, new blu-rays. Enjoy!

Still Friday here in Chicago. I had a crappy day and needed cheering up. First-time watch of Gay Divorcee. What joy! The toons on the blu-ray were also a hoot. I finished listening to Cameron Crowe's memoir "The Uncool," so of course...
Anyway, they all did the trick. #letterboxd #lastfourwatched

We watched "Four Christmases." Was this a mistake? Well, it's the nature of a podcast like this. They can't all be winners, even with a cast as good as this. Enjoy! www.nowplayingnetwork.net/christmasmov...

Sinners deserves Best Cinematographer simply for the fact that it's a modern movie where you can tell what's going on during all the night scenes

Last four. Hitchcock being bored, James Whale being tormented and Loop De Loop being "kind, considerate and charming."

Our latest episode is up! Yup, we did this movie and, yes, for the reason you're thinking of (IYKYK). Steve Prokopy joins us to break down the film, the intricacies of the Christmas Adventurer's Club and some basic Oscar talk. Also, new Blu-rays! Enjoy! www.nowplayingnetwork.net/christmasmov...

I would also recommend Erik Childress's commentary on the KL blu-ray. He mounts a good case for a lot of it, while also acknowledging its many flaws.

Are you going to see the Oscar-nominated short films this weekend? Great, let's compare notes. I've seen all fifteen nominees and have a little capsule review for each. All in all, not a bad batch this year. www.rogerebert.com/festivals/sh...

Can someone confirm something for me regarding the Oscar Shorts? I've never seen them in a theater, only the screeners for review. Have they always had bumpers between the shorts announcing which short you're about to watch? Or do they just play through uninterrupted?

Valentine's Day Movies Actually: My Bloody Valentine (1981) The second Valentine's Day Movies Actually episode takes a strong left turn from the warm and fuzzy feels of the Garry Marshall ensemble rom-com they covered a couple years ago. This time, Kerry and ...

New episode! We're taking a detour and doing Valentine's Day again, but more for the anti-V-Day crowd. Patrick Ripoll joins us for a discussion of this much-celebrated slasher film from 1981. We also talk about the remake, Hitchcock and new blu-rays. Enjoy! www.nowplayingnetwork.net/christmasmov...

Got my preview copy of this and nowhere on the packaging does it say it's a BD-R. I put it in the player and I was informed it was a data disk. Then I had to hunt for the correct file to play, which didn't play all the way through and wouldn't let me turn off captions.

Eerie Visions of Donald Trump in 1981's "Shock Treatment" | Features | Roger Ebert On how a sequel to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is frighteningly relevant today.

I wrote about it back in 2016 after revisiting it and noticing how deeply prophetic it was to everything in our culture today. It's a hard movie to love on first viewing for many people, but it gets better, richer and catchier every time. www.rogerebert.com/features/eer...
